Recommended Posts

The 2020 YRT budget is being presented to the York Region Committee of the Whole on December 5. Among the service cuts proposed:

  • 55 Davis Drive to be discontinued - 55B Davis Drive will continue to operate in rush hours only (2020).
  • 10 Woodbridge reduced to rush hours only (2020).
  • 40 Unionville Local - Saturday (2021), Sunday (2020), and On-Request (2021) service discontinued.
  • 41 Markham Local - Saturday (2021), Sunday (2020), and On-Request (2021) service discontinued.
  • 13 Islington Saturday service discontinued (2020).
  • 12 Pine Valley reduced to rush hours only (2021).
  • 23 Thornhill Woods reduced to rush hours only (2021).
  • 44 Bristol reduced to rush hours and Saturday only (2021). Saturday evening On-Request service will continue.
  • 3 Thornhill weekend service reduced to roughly 85 minutes (2021).
  • 26 Maple Sunday service discontinued (2021).
  • 7 Martin Grove Saturday service reduced to roughly 72 minutes (2021).
  • 18 Bur Oak Saturday service discontinued (2021).
  • On-Demand Blue Willow and Maple Glen discontinued (2021).
  • TAP Program budget reduced by 40% (2020).
  • Service increase budget reduced: 2.1 million for additional services planned in 2020, 2.6 million in 2021, 2.65 million in 2022. 
  • Ticket validators and multi-ride machines will be removed in time for 2021. Based on the budgeted amount seems like tickets will no longer be accepted starting around September 2020.
  • Rapidway station cleaning will be reduced from bi-weekly to monthly.

It's a damn shame that York Regional Council again has forced YRT to make a huge amount of service cuts to the points that YRT is no longer relevant, despite their fancy VIVA Stations and Rapidways. Cut too much and essentially there'd be nothing left.

That is actually terrible. They’ll keep cutting things until there’s no transit system left

Service cuts leads to lower ridership. Lower ridership leads to more service cuts. Rinse and repeat every year

Numerous? Considering the constant and consistant cutbacks to service, I'd suggest that at most two are sustainable in the long-run, and really only one is certain.

I have had to wait 75 minutes for a bus on route 18 because of overcrowding after exam review day at Bur Oak Secondary School back in 2018 (11:35 am trip), an extra bus was not sent despite the vehicle at 100% capacity. Yet Southeast still sent 4 buses which ran empty on the 402 at 3 pm...

Speaking of ticket machines being removed, paper tickets will no longer be accepted (paper fare media is already no longer sold) as of July 1, 2020 so the MultiRide machines and the ticket validators will be retired by then.

They need to increase service on routes that serve major points of interest, let alone maintain service on weekends. The Community Bus service that used to run on weekends was a good example, I remember seeing good ridership on route 522 on Saturdays since it directly served residents travelling to/from Markville Mall. If they want more people on public transit, they should consider reinstating essential routes or maintaining them as they are

The fact that they are slashing service is extremely terrible. A lot of them sound like they go into a lot of neighbourhoods. The service is not worth $4.25. That is probably one of the factors to the decline in service. No one wants to spend what could be extra food on the table.

Tie that in with their extremely relaxed running times on local routes, the service is just not something someone wants to waste their time on, routes like the 4,20,77,85 and 105 ( Southwest routes ) almost always have the buses running 20-30km/h below the speed limit post PM rush hour just to stay relatively on time 

If they really wanted to save money while maintaining service they would cut the running times and save on buses, introduce interlining to reduce the amount of buses dedicated to small quiet routes. 

But for a for-profit system that YRT uses ( contractors for everything ) cutting service is the only solution and it lets the contractors make money 

 

- example of lax running times for evening would be routes 105 for TTC/YRT, TTC from Sheppard west to Steele's is 6 minutes, yrt is 10-13

I saw two 17xx Nova LFS Attics going with on the 404 today. They look brand new.  But they where going east to get the 404, so they are not built in Quebec? Or have decals applied somewhere in the west end?

I have always wonder why the buses travel so slow, where as GO transit and TTC drivers drive according to traffic.

Just a small comparison as to why people choose cars over transit in York Region Is this I just pulled on Google maps

Pioneer village station to Jane/teston ( the entire trip of route 20 ) 

18 by car, 37 by transit.. now I'm aware the 20 enters 3 stations in between but if it was the TTC running it you can guarantee it would be under 25-28 min

Do the companies get measured on, on time performance? If that is the case I can see why the schedule is so padded. 

From Co workers that used to work there they all say the same thing, yes they are penalized for delays in service. I believe one said it was 8 min or more of an unexplainable delay would result In a penalty. That being said, contractor or not; it's highly unfair to the public and YRTs ridership is hurting because of many factors including this

Are there exceptions for poor weather and accidents on route?

Yes if an accident involves one of the vehicles.  But YRT institutes a Winter Preparedness Plan when a snowstorm strikes the Region and some roads may be closed in rare cases causing detours on routes or suspension of some service.  In the case of bad weather or any other service issue, extra buses are used for standby to help with the delays.

 1191, 1192 and 1197 was sold to TOK and rest will be send to scrap as they are sold to langalles.
