14.. Unreal.. And guess what will happen to him? Absolutely squat.

Why isn't the TTC releasing video snapshots? Their faces are no doubt masked up but people can still recognize the  way someone looks with their clothing and rat them out.

Some people would say oh he's just a kid. If you get stabbed or murder by a kid, then it's misfortune. The kid doesn't know better. Well at least that's what the law seems to imply.

Now you wonder if the kid would get any fines or jail time for assaulting a transit worker on top of attempted murder. If he does get a criminal record that sticks for life, then he'll be part of the "second class" citizen pool where his future would be limited in options and would likely commit more crimes. As these kids commit crimes at youngers and younger ages, they would be released at younger ages to give them more time to cause more harm to society. You wonder why schools don't educate people to be more social responsible and discipline themselves in public. Seems like freedom means it's okay to be rude and aggressive.

No, the law implies that at such a young age there is still hope for them to mature and grow out of it.

For the record, there have absolutely been cases where they've identified suspects normally covered under Young Offenders Act where the courts deemed it in the best interests of the public. I doubt that will happen here as the likelihood is that the first one will ID the others before too long.

Kids are getting more empowered to commit crimes by seeing other idiots on youtube, tiktok and the like. They also know the soft on crime policies, even softer for young offenders.

There just isn't enough deterrents for them to care.

TTC’s CEO got a 21 per cent pay hike last year even with ridership, revenue at historic lows

$438,495, up from only $361,000 which is a raise of $77,495.  I will leave it to all of you to form your own opinions about the value-for-money proposition there.

I remember reading years ago how transit operators were making over $100,000 with overtime including how one supervisor racked up over $66,000 of overtime in a year. The response was "it is cheaper to offer overtime than to hire additional employees." Having to figure out how to reign in those costs.

A $77,495 pay increase is pretty significant since most people are lucky to even get a wage increase. Feels more like a publicly traded company than a government organization having to reach certain targets and metrics to receive bonuses tied to performance. Seeing how the CEO of Metrolinx made almost twice the amount of the TTC CEO at $838,960.91 claiming "the workload has increased significantly."

Retaining top talent isn't cheap with the expertise they are paying certain people with certain skillsets with a contract for a fixed term like 5 years. At the same time, I do question the contracts that are signed between top management and the employer. Especially having to offer all kinds of incentives to bring them to the organization.

Any money paid to Leary is money wasted.

How the man has managed to fail upwards into the seat at TTC is still beyond me.

Fail upwards was exactly the phrase I used in a message to one of my friends when I posted that article.  We ended up having a bit of a conversation about Leary and the guy at Metrolinx who made it into the top 5 of the sunshine list.

Thing is, Rick Leary isnt top talent. He's bottom of the barrel fish feed, who's completely inept and cant perform his duties with any kind of effectiveness.

I wouldn't use the term "failing upwards" to describe Verster.

He may be making more money now, but in terms of prestige Metrolinx is nowhere in comparison to some of his former employers.

I've heard a lot of bad things about Rick Leary, but what are the reasons why people think he's worse CEO? Just curious.

I remember a while back John Tory mentioned how he talks with Rick Leary on a regular basis, so its not like John Tory is unaware of what Rick Leary is all about. they seem to have a good relationship. I just assumed Rick Leary does whatever John Tory tells him to do, and I guess that's why Rick Leary is still CEO.

I do believe the position of CEO is exaggerated, I think going back to being General Manager is a better accurate title for his position.

I'm sure TTC can find talent , it comes down to who the politicians want, and who will fulfill the agenda. The best GM at TTC no matter who you talk to agree that it was David Gunn, unfortunately he's too old to come back.

I'm not saying Rick Leary is good , I'm just curious as to why he's not liked. Between Andy Byford and Rick Leary, Andy Byford was way more interactive with the customer and people felt more engaged with TTC. But like I said John Tory appears to be fine with Rick Leary.

Maybe Rick Leary should spend more time talking to passengers and employees instead. There has been a very noticeable decline in service quality and morale since Andy Byford left.

He did say his management style is different in an interview when he first became CEO. Clearly there was no pressure for him to be more out there with the customer, after all these years as CEO. Also Look at the TTC Board, its not transit friendly, they definitely don't care about employee morale.  And like I mentioned, customer engagement is not all there.  Maybe the politicians don't want a CEO that will outshine them like Andy Byford did, and instead just manage how they see fit, so Rick Leary is a perfect fit?

Ultimately, will any of this be enough to boot him out of his job, no. I believe he has another year on is contract, which I expect him to get another raise, so we all should brace ourselves. And if Rick Leary and John Tory and the TTC Board have a good relationship, I don't see him going anywhere, unless he himself decides to leave after his contract is up.

John Tory is fine with most things about Toronto, he's all about status quo and not rocking the boat. He wont push the envelope with basically anything that requires more then the bare minimum, wont increase funding to city departments that are starving for more staff (ie: city planning, heritage preservation, etc.), wont press Toronto Transportation Services to get their heads out of their a*$#, and the list really goes on. I mean if you're going to select people like Denzil Minnen-Wong to be one of your deputys, than that pretty much sums up a lot.

As for Leary, i'll speak from a customer service point of view as to why he's a much worse CEO (probably the worst the TTC has ever had).

-He's increased running/recovery time on most routes in the name of "reducing short turns" but really all that's done is increase headways/bunching and cause excessive wait times at the outer ends of routes where customers are forced to wait for drivers to pull up to the stop.

-Service reliability has gone down on virtually all surface routes (on that note, on-time performance metrics have been increasingly cloaked up)

-Kept the TTC board in the dark about a potential near collision between 2 trains on Line 1 for close to one good full year (let's not forget about other derailments we've seen in the subway system such as the Keele Yard incident as well)

Then there's this from his time as COO of Boston's MBTA:

I hear all that. Yet Jaye Robinson on twitter today was defending this guys pay increase. The politicians clearly don't have a problem with him and what hes doing

And that's why John Tory will be re elected in October. This city is not motivated, and John Tory being a career politician is playing it well.

With the way the politicians defend, justify and in some cases don't even address serious allegations against Rick Leary, I don't see Rick Leary going anywhere. It will be up to him if he wants to stick around or leave TTC.

Rick Leary is very much a "yes man" - the type of person who will implement whatever his masters ask him to do. All of the things mentioned above are symptoms of this: short-turns are politically bad, so schedules are artificially lengthened so there is never a need to do a short turn (regardless of the other issues it causes); service is cut to meet budget projections; and information on potential or actual incidents are covered up to avoid embarrassing leadership, even if it means lessons go unlearned and problems repeat themselves. The endless parade of empty "good news" stories to the Commission, patting themselves on the back for minor things, while there are few if any hard discussions on necessary topics.

So yeah, the politicians love him. Because he makes them look better, without them needing to do any actual effort. And as a result he will never leave until he fucks up so majorly it hits the news and the Board is forced to fire him.

The Toronto Star: Which are the TTC's most dangerous bus routes?

Non-paywall version

And the answer to the clickbait-y headline:

TTC bus routes with most incidents

The routes with the highest number of criminal and bylaw offences, 2016 to 2021

36 Finch West  75
52 Lawrence  73
32 Eglinton West  73
29 Dufferin  73
35 Jane  71
89 Weston  53
320 Yonge Night Bus  40
7 Bathurst  39
45 Kipling  38
41 Keele  37
SOURCE: TTC
TORONTO STAR GRAPHIC

Tuesdays in the afternoon rush hour in May and July are when most incidents occurred.  No one's quite sure why.

I don't see how those numbers have any meaning whatsoever without normalizing them by ridership. It mostly reads like a list of TTC's busiest bus routes.

Only thing that jumps out is the 320 Yonge - which is by far the busiest night bus.
