OC and STO service disruptions

An update: Rideau Transit Maintenance is working to clear one set of tracks to ensure that westbound service can resume close to full capacity.

The plan once one set is cleared and available, Line 1 will be split into two branches.

  • Tunney's to Rideau (western section)
  • St. Laurent to Blair (eastern section)
  • R1 replacement buses operating between St. Laurent and Rideau

Goal is to have the western section restored by tomorrow afternoon. 

Tweet attached indicate the memo from the general manager.

Very unlikely since even when they do the repairs to the overhead wire system, they still have to clear the train along with testing to ensure that it will work before resuming regular service. Rideau Transit Maintenance is working to draw additional resources to assist from other areas to minimize the down time.

I would plan for at least a few days.

First off I would say that even though the system being hit by lightning is an act of God and is in no way the systems fault.

 

But at the same time taking over 12 hours to figure out how to remove a disabled train and then apparently they don't have the expertise in house to make these repairs?

They don't have a diesel operated truck or buggy that can tow trains to the yard? What kind of fly by the seat of their pants is this?

There is damage in a wide area, so it depends on where the traction power has to be cut. If the damage extends past the isolator for Hurdman, then Hurdman has to be de-energized.

There are ways to move the train, they have them in the yard. You're assuming that there's a rush to do so though, which there isn't. The train is fine where it is for now, the last thing you want to do is move it and damage more OCS in the process.

Nobody says they don't have crews or equipment, but this is significant damage. Alstom has never had to make a repair of this scale, it makes sense to bring in people who know what they are doing, as they have on some of the maintenance shutdowns.

The R1 buses stopping at Tremblay while the trains are still servicing Tremblay seems odd to me. 

If the R1 buses went from Saint-Laurent directly to Hurdman, that seems like it would be a much quicker and more efficient ride, taking the highway. Could OC transpo do this, and add a separate shuttle to service from Hurdman to Tremblay? Similar to what they have done before for Cyrville.

The reason why trains turnaround at Tremblay is because the crossover tracks are west of St. Laurent Station. There are no crossover tracks east of St. Laurent Station. 

I think a lot of things should be done. The trouble is that there is only a limited amount of resources and right now, OC Transpo is short transit operators to implement such changes.

Sure there may be a lot of damage but it takes them 16 hours to survey the damage? Did they wait until 10am to wakeup and go to work? I just don't understand the lack of urgency on their part to get things up and running. If it was Toronto within a few hours they would already have crews trying to restore service.

You're making a number of assumptions here - who is saying it took 16 hours to survey the damage? Photos of the work show a number of pieces of equipment from Alltrade, the contractor who originally installed the OCS. That equipment is not local, and likely had to come in from Toronto, where Alltrade is working on the LRT lines there. The could have made the call for that equipment within 2 hours of the incident, but it's still not going to arrive until later on Monday.

Once again, there is significant damage here, almost a kilometer of line that needs repair. Toronto has an older, larger system, so the TTC has equipment to perform maintenance and repairs that likely can't be justified here yet. When stage 2 opens and the existing system starts to age and require regular upkeep, some more hi-rail equipment is likely on the list. Even then, damage of this scale likely requires outside help.

St. Laurent Station is closed due to "police activity". Seems both LRT and BRT are affected. LRT trains will bypass St. Laurent Station. Reason: Ottawa homicide: Man killed at St. Laurent Centre | CTV News

Yesterday afternoon (Nov 10, 2022), there was a disruption on O-Trian Line 1. 

This is a video taken at uOttawa Station on my observations in how they were managing the disruption. A more detailed description of my observation is on the YouTube page of the video.

I'm just curious as to why on the STO Novabuses that the front door has 1 large door & 1 smaller door net to it? Which differ from OC's Nova's that have  two large doors at the front. Is there a reason STO went with what they have?

It’s an option NovaBus offers called a 70/30 split door. Its purpose is to control the flow of passengers when entering while also increasing the operators visibility when looking through the door. When loading a person using a wheelchair the small door can be opened to allow the ramp to deploy. 
 

reason OC didn’t order it is likely it costs more and they wanted to keep buses as similar as possible. Personally I rather have the 70/30 split for more visibility. 
 

edit: the 70/30 door is almost more popular, outside of Ontario majority of agencies use this setup. It started in 2009 with the very end of the 2nd gen Novas and has continued since

Cost and operator preference. Brampton, Burlington and Hamilton in Ontario went with the 70/30 because of the added benefits they received off the doors. OC either didn’t care or didn’t want to spend the extra money, or both.

Expect major delays in the core tomorrow and Friday with Biden visiting for 2 days. The STO has no plan as we speak which is quite concerning since Portage will be the only bridge open (during the early evening) and Champlain is way off course for many STO routes.

OC expects similar disruptions but they have somewhat of a plan which can be read here.

Rolling closures related to the presidential motorcade, which includes the Alexandra and Cartier bridges, won't be communicated until the last minute for security reasons. Portage, Chaudiere, Champlain bridges will remain open unless something weird happens. It's more than likely the STO will just have to wait out the closures.

Same with OC. They've fully planned for what's been communicated so far. They'll be waiting out rolling closures as the motorcade makes its way across the city.

O-Trian LRT Line 1 is shutdown due to "loss of power" (me editorializing: though likely it has to do with the Freezing Rain event right now).

R1 implemented.
