Detours and delays expected downtown when La Machine creatures take over July 27–30 July 26, 2017 Route 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 11, 12, 14, 16, 18, 19

La Machine, an Ottawa 2017 Signature Event, is coming to downtown Ottawa and the ByWard Market from July 27 to 30. Routes 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 11, 12, 14, 16, 18 and 19 will be detoured throughout the weekend in order create safe zones for spectators and creatures alike. These routes and all routes that run on the Transitway will also experience short disruptions or delays to service as La Machine creatures pass through.

You know it's a problem when operators are finding out about these closures through the newspaper or on the public website. Not a mention of it at all internally, just like the Canada Day detours and the removal of Lees 3A.

Yeah, just like the Work at Riverside Stn (Temp wooden platform in use for NB traffic)

It wasn't just the closure that they were complaining about, it was the badly planned services in general on Canada Day, many people couldn't actually get Downtown as all the buses were starting at outer termini and were soon full, there were no buses starting along the routes closer to Downtown.

people are also just generally frustrated with OC Transpo's poor level of regular service these days with constant delays and cancellations on many routes on a daily basis.

Manconis general "it's never our fault" attitude in any interview also irks many, IMO he is a very poor manager of Transit in this city.

Okay, could you do a better job?

Could you, taking into account ALL the parameters OC Transpo must fall within and make the company better than what it is now? This includes, but is not limited to...

  • managing a thousands-strong, multi-skilled, unionised workforce including front-line operators, mechanics and attendants, custodial and facilities staff, special constables, fare inspectors, supervisors, superintendents, office employees, among others,
  • keeping operational a public transit system plagued by delays as a result of infrastructure construction and expansion, related and unrelated general traffic, as well as ignorant non-vehicular road users,
  • being completely aware of the logistics surrounding, despite some recent changes, Ottawa's workforce being still largely concentrated downtown, commuting at roughly the same hours, and generally lacking in counterflow, resulting in the majority of required peak service being uni-directional,
  • all while operating within the constraints of and being unrealistically accountable to a city council that sets the budget and self-image as the bottom line.
  • oh, and also while being general manager of the entire Transportation Services Department, of which OC Transpo is just a part.

I don't know what you think running a transit service entails. I'm not a manager or a decision-maker on any level, but I can tell you from my own experience it's not a simple matter of reallocating a resource from A to B. If everything was predictable down to the second, down to one-digit, everything can be properly planned and appropriately budgeted. But it's not. Moving a bus off its planned route or modifying it can snowball into something greater than the original plan can cause. There are no giant pincers to pick up a bus to move it to another point like a blimp. Nor are there any whimsical methods of summoning extra operators and buses to a location at the second it's needed.

Do you know how many factors affect service daily, hourly, even down to the minute that are out of OC Transpo's control? Let's count. Traffic (which, in itself, varies greatly as well), construction, road closures (motorcades, infrastructure issues, collisions and other incidents, events), off-board emergencies, on-board emergencies and incidents, other emergencies (operators have lives, too), are the more oft-occurring.

As mentioned above, OC Transpo operates within the constraints of the city budget. If there are no extra funds, there is no extra service. People will complain. If there are extra funds, and extra service, but much less ridership than planned, people will complain. Either way, there is no pleasing everyone, and "closer to downtown" aren't the only residents that require transit service.

So, returning to our original point, could you do a better job? Taking all that, and more, into account, could you be the figurehead of a multi-faceted organisation with multiple decision-makers at various levels of the company, and be better at it than Mr. Manconi? Sure, it's just your opinion that he is not a good general manager, but to follow-up with nothing is just as bad.

I take it everyone would rather have Mercier back?

I've been told by several drivers that "every bus OC has is on the road". Zero spares, thus cancellations are inevitable. Unless someone is willing to pony up the money for corrective measures (bus leasing/purchases, TPMs, etc), or someone on council actually asks for it, I expect nothing to be done until LRT opens, and probably very little done after that if anything.

From where and how did you source "everyone would rather have Mercier back?"

Hypothetical question in response to the comment that the current transit head was not a good transit head. Hence the "I take it".

I am not disagreeing with you. It is certainly a difficult and demanding job that certainly not everyone can do. However, you have to remember that he also has a lot of staff (that he does have to manage) but that make a lot of decisions for him. My point is that he isn't necessarily doing all those things directly. And no, I am not saying that I could do better then him because he, for the time that he is the manager or whatever, is doing a decent job.

As I'm looking through Twitter right now, La Machine (Long Ma the Dragon) is on MacKenzie King Bridge right now.

Service delays are now expected for all routes that would be travelling through there.

What’s the point of this thread? I mean, can’t you just see evrything on this thread at the OC Transpo website?

Have to remember that this thread was made almost 10 years ago. Well before live transit updates through many channels (text message, email, social media and soon information boards at select stations).

A lot of the threads created today were made very long ago before communication methods have changed. Though some still serve the purpose such as questions, Confederation LRT and routes as some examples.

This morning, there was a major traffic accident on RR174 westbound between Blair and St. Laurent Blvd. As a result, buses coming from Orleans heading to Downtown were required to make the following detour: From the "temporary" Blair Station, continue going through the lower level roadway at Blair Station, right Gloucester Centre roadway, right City Park drive (though I saw some operators making a left-turn instead), left Ogilvie, left St. Laurent to St. Laurent Station.

I heard some transit operators were lost and took a different route than planned.

At the same time, should be standard by now that in the event there is an issue between Blair and St. Laurent, Ogilvie would be the fallback route (once transit control is aware and determine that course of action). That provides the path of least resistance and gets to St. Laurent Boulevard quickly minus having to deal with the traffic lights and multiple intersections involved in the detour.

To further compound the issue, route 94 and 135 also were affected by another accident. Though it was cleared within 15 minutes. The 94 more affected because of the previous accident mentioned.

Now, they just posted it is all clear as of 7:08 PM.

I saw one Route 104 Carleton (an Invero), trying to "cheat traffic" by deviating from the detour that Transit Control gave out by turning left onto Cummings from Ogilvie westbound - presumably from there he went on Labelle, Lemieux Street (i.e. 417/St. Laurent westbound off-ramp) to St. Laurent Blvd. :)
