Had a chance to shoot the Whistler Sea to Sky climb train while it came into the north van station yesterday as well as some shots of the Banff/Jasper train at the Vancouver station:

So I was getting ready to pull a Greyhound run out of Pemberton at 19:30 last night. Just before departure time a track safety patrol vehicle went down the track. I heard a whistle just after. I couldn't believe that a train would be THAT close to a safety patrol. However this one was indeed just minutes behind the patrol. Hope you enjoy RMR 8015 as she approaches the Pemberton Station last night. I tried to catch a video of this train at the crosssing on Highway 99 at mile 85.12 of the Squamish Sub but my battery died just before the train arrived at the crosssing.

Western Rocky Mountaineer Express is undergoing pilot project with pre-clear at US Board, which is permitted with a bill to make crossings the Canadian and US border quicker and easier:

Doesn't the southbound Rocky Mountaineer to Seattle already pre-clear US Immigration in Vancouver the same as Amtrak's Cascades? Or is Immigration for Rocky done in Blaine WA?

The only thing I note that's changing for the Cascades ......is the US Customs will now also be done in Vancouver instead of Blaine WA so I imagine this is the same for the Rocky Mountaineer..

For the Rocky Mountaineer to be 'pre-cleared' to enter Canada.....Canada would have to establish a CBSA facility in Seattle. Wouldn't it just clear CBSA in Vancouver the same as Amtrak's Cascades?

There is no need for pre-clearance on the Rocky Mountaineer between Vancouver and Banff-Jasper or Quesnel as these are puerly domestic trains.

Rocky Mountaineer is officially starting an all-American tour route in 2021, from Denver to Moab. I'm curious to see how well it works out, being their first route that has absolutely no Canadian portion. I do wish they would bring back the Whistler Mountaineer. I assume this will make use of a trainset based in the USA, as deadheading that train back and forth for basic maintenance would be rather costly.

They know which way their bread is buttered.

With Americans unable to cross the border into Canada for the foreseeable future, they are going to the Americans in the hope of getting them to part with their money this way.

Dan

I do wonder whether this route will continue after COVID or if it's a stop-gap. It can't be easy to throw together a makeshift railcruise to only use it for a season.

I've run into a bizarre set of findings from Google Earth:

  1. 8/15/2009: 21 cars with only one locomotive parted the Rocky Mountaineer Station in Vancouver, with a red-carpet welcome laid out, some sort of huge archway set up over the makeshift access route to the platform (that only allowed access to the front of the trail) and a massive group of people at the side building. Anyone know what was going on that that time? It is literally the longest consist that can fit on their track and an inappropriate amount of power (not nearly enough for twenty-one cars).
  2. 10/15/2013 to 3/19/2014: One set of cars (two single-level and one bilevel car) stays undisturbed for months on platform. Where are the rest of the cars stored through the winter and why wouldn't they be there? This set of cars is also on the tracks throughout many other winter seasons - is it maybe used for staff training? It's also there from 11/10/2014 to 4/8/2015. This time the configuration of cars changes around a bit, but for the mostpart, it remains right in front of the station.

Also, the more I look back, the more I very genuinely miss the white-and-blue design from the 1990s/2000s. The candy cane hill livery is rubbish and looks awful. Yes, it's cohesive, but it looks like a blue and gold flavoured Christmas treat.

To the second question maybe training, but definitely group sales and meetings.

For the first - do you have a link? I have a suspicion it's Olympic related, and a local train that didn't really go anywhere.

As for a link - it's within Google Earth, so no - open up the timeline tab, zoom in on the station, and move to the dates specified. I suspected it was an Olympic-related thing, maybe a promotional even to show off their services to Whistler during the olympics?

Just had a chance to look. So I think it's the Alberta - RMR - Vancouver Olympic Committee joint venture launch, where Alberta had a sponsorship and advertising thing going on with RMR.

Tried to Google my suspicions and couldn't find the launch date of that. But it is my semi-educated if not exhausted memory guess. Shortly after a couple of their bilevel dome cars got Alberta wraps.

Rocky Mountaineer has confirmed that suspension of freight on the BCR corridor will not impact the operations of RMR trains. Ask and ye shall receive.

The question then becomes, but for how long? I have to believe that CN is downgrading the track maintenance regime along with the suspension of freight service. Only paying for the least amount of trackwork possible to keep the line technically in service.

Being someone who lives on Vancouver Island, I am all too familiar with how that turns out.
