Btw, I still have some comment for that, even though this bus fitting Allison B400R transmission, it's faster than the previous C40LF, but I think if Translink choose 6-speed version of B400R transmission, it would be more fuel efficency instead the current 5-speed~~

Faster than the C40LFs with C Gas+ or S50G? C Gas+ should be faster anyhow.

Explain how 6 speed is more efficient than 5 speed please?

They're faster on hills for those C40LFR, becoz' the previous C40LF is fitting Voith transmission, most of the driver think they're tranny~~

Voith + S50 is definitely not the choice for hill-climbing, I can use nothing but one word to describe the situation that it's going to be like - "pathetic". C+ gas combine with Voith is not a bad combo for hill-climbing though..........the transmission tends to "push" the gear so high before it changes, therefore, you get the engine to work to its extreme at its 2nd gear..........it's powerful, but it's really loud.

Back on C40LFRs............sounds like P3319, P3327 and P3328 are out!

You guys should have D864 as the tranny on those buses, GTA's are fast with those. Is it possible for C40LFRs to get D864?

Opinions from drivers and mechanics are never counted anyway <_<

PS: I love those D40LFs with Voith D864 + ISL in GTA too............sweet buses to ride!

I liked them too, but somehow I don't think I would want to ride them on a daily basis. Quite frankly I had enough Voith in Mississauga to last me for quite a while and I'm perfectly happy with the S50/B400R fest we have here.

Anyways, barring any unforeseen complications I should be getting out to Coquitlam on Friday afternoon so I can finally see a C40LFR in person, take photos and perhaps ride one. Expect to see some shots if that happens!

Yes, most manufacture have recommended to have D864 since 2002.

The more gears you get, the faster and better torque builds up.

Your statement just reminded me of a long forgotten question that I always forget to ask.

Why are the YRT 02 Vs faster than the 03 Vs when the 02s have 3 speed while 03s have 5 speeds? Are all Voiths faster than Allison regardless? Because if you do another comparison: TTC RTS with 3 speed VS TTC 96 V diesel with 5 speed, the Vs clearly go faster than the RTS.

RTS might be heavier than the V.

Our 2-speed Fishbowls are super slow in acceleration compared to some of the 3-speed ones.

This might be totally wrong, but doesn't the number of gears increase fuel economy or something? At a higher gear, the engine speed is lower than at a lower gear.

Yes, RPM drops once you go for a much higher gear.

The thing is, it also depends on the engine on how much power adapt with the transmission.

After my recent visit to Van City I noticed most of the CNG test buses and I think the other Flyer bues with roof mounted equipment had a yellow mini step ladder at the rear of the coach. This same yellow piece of equipment is located on the new C40LFR's as well. Anybody know what this is for? I have never seen this on any other transit property which uses CNG's, Hybrid buses.

I heard that this is for the mechanics to safely check the CNG tanks every so often.

Here's what Derek Cheung has to say on the matter:

They are yellow steps to the top of the CNG tanks.

This doesn't quite explain why they don't appear on CNG vehicles operated by other agencies though. Perhaps it's just an additional safety feature, not absolutely necessary, but a nice thing to have.

Mechanics have to check and inspect the tanks from time to time to make sure they are good.

The roof is not flat, so chances are anyone will slip and fall. But, I belive they have black strips for some gripping which I looked at the HSR C40LF at my college on 2nd floor.
