Oui, ja, yes to more rewards opportunities!

Air France-KLM and WestJet now offer reciprocal frequent flyer benefits

Further to their successful codeshare partnership, today Air France-KLM and WestJet launched the earn phase of the airlines' reciprocal frequent flyer agreement. Passengers can now accumulate their choice of Flying Blue Miles or WestJet dollars on all WestJet, Air France, and KLM flights.

The ability to earn Flying Blue Miles or WestJet dollars on Air France-KLM will bring significant benefit to guests of all three airlines," said Ed Sims, WestJet Executive Vice-President, Commercial. "We are confident that our members are going to love earning WestJet dollars while flying on the extensive Air France-KLM global network, and we are equally excited to welcome their frequent flyers aboard and offer them the opportunity to earn Flying Blue Miles on the growing WestJet network."

"We are delighted to be further bolstering our partnership with WestJet and to now offer our 27 million Flying Blue members the privilege of earning Miles with our Canadian partner," declared Jean-Noël Rault, Vice-President and General Manager of Air France-KLM Canada. "We are already working on the next phase, which will enable our members to soon enjoy award tickets on flights operated by WestJet. We also look forward to offer WestJet guests the possibility to experience our service and discover the extent of our worldwide network."

The next phase, to be implemented by the end of 2017, will enable members of both frequent flyer programs to redeem their miles or dollars on all Air France, KLM and WestJet flights.

I'm not sure what to make of the author.  They author only seems to make two points: somewhere between 25% and 50% of the time gate agents do not enforce zone boarding and one the seatbelt light goes off, a few people who really need to take a leak make a dash for the lavatories.  Both of these examples I'd cite as equivalent to asking for an extra pickle on your burger at Harvey's.   Both substantially increase customer satisfaction at insignificant cost.  What's worse: discretely letting the odd queue jumper pass or stopping the line to chastise and send the queue jumper embarrassingly to the back of the line?  Do you demean passengers and require they ask permission to use the lavatory?  Do you let some smug rule breakers feel satisfied about getting away with the extra pickle or do you instill fear and discomfort in everyone to the point where they feel the airline is being exceptionally generous to even allow them to board the flight they've paid for as some other airlines seem to do.

And as for the lazy guy that put his carry-on in the bin at the front, it's quite rude but what rule is that breaking?  Overhead bins aren't assigned with seats, maybe once there's a fee with the future ULCC but not now.  And if WestJet ever started using both the front and back doors again, as Ask the Pilot blogger Patrick Smith suggests is common elsewhere, then this guy would have to wait until the aircraft is nearly empty to get his bag.

From the Windsor Star

Ultra-low-cost carrier Swoop coming to Windsor airport

Canada’s new ultra-low-cost air carrier Swoop will be operating out of Windsor, but the destinations passengers will be able to reach from YQG are being kept under wraps.

Canada’s new ultra-low-cost air carrier Swoop will be operating out of Windsor, but the destinations passengers will be able to reach from YQG are being kept under wraps.

“We will for competitive reasons — and I don’t think we’re unique in having this approach — won’t be unveiling our network until our booking launch which will be in February,” said Bob Cummings, WestJet’s executive vice-president responsible for the launch of the new airline.

“If we do end up signing big airport agreements, we may announce those beforehand which will give an indication of where we are flying to or from.”

Cummings said he has asked Windsor airport for information on what the current situation is and the catchment area and how far people are willing to drive to save money on a flight.

“Windsor’s very interesting,” Cummings said. “They have Sunwing and they have Transat operating over there in the winter.

“When you look at Detroit and how big Detroit is — and I believe it’s 22 minutes from downtown Detroit to the Windsor airport — and when you look at the catchment area of Detroit and you look at the economics and demographics of Detroit and the propensity to travel and so forth, it’s fairly high, so there are potentially people coming from Detroit and potentially people going to other border airports,” said Cummings.

Swoop is planning on offering fares 40 per cent lower than those currently available in Canada.

The airline will operate six Boeing 737-800s with a capacity of about 170 passengers beginning next June.

Cummings said he will be sitting down with Windsor and other airports to try and figure out how to make tickets as cheap as possible.

“The airports, with respect to their aviation fees, their landing and terminal fees, their AIFs (airport improvement fees), they’re a big part of that,” said Cummings.

“In Canada, the fuel taxes and some of the other things, we’re not going to be able to touch all of that,” he said.

“As we head towards our market launch, we’ll be sitting down with airports with respect to the low fares we’ll bring to the table with our business model and cost structure which we plan to get to very close to U.S. ULCC (ultra-low-cost carrier) cost structure and offer low fares but we then plan to marry up with airports to try and bring down the ticket price and stimulate growth.”

Cummings said the Boeing 737-800 has a range of 4,500 kilometres.

“In Windsor’s case, if you draw a 2,800-mile (4,500-kilometre) radius around Windsor you can get quite far south,” Cummings said.

“The target is the leisure market with respect to vacations down south, moreso in the summer visiting friends and relatives.”

WestJet named APEX Award Five-Star Winner

WestJet today announced it has been named a Five-Star winner by The Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX) at the APEX Awards at the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center in Long Beach, California. WestJet was named a Five-Star winner in the low-cost category and was the only Canadian airline recognized at the Five-Star level.

"We are pleased to have been recognized by APEX as providing a guest experience worthy of a five-star rating," said Rossen Dimitrov, WestJet Chief Guest Experience Officer. "Our brand of caring and friendly service resonates with our guests and we are most appreciative that our efforts are appreciated by the travelling public. As WestJet continues our expansion to new destinations, it's exciting that our focus on guest experience is being rewarded."

The APEX Awards are determined using the TripIt app from Concur, with more than 13 million travellers rating airlines on a five-star scale, from November 2016 through July 2017. The ratings determined the winners of the Passenger Choice Awards, with four- and five-star-rated airlines further honored in the categories of Global, Major Regional and Low-Cost airlines.

Don't think that much people have filmed WestJet's 737 MAX from the inside. Here's my review from Toronto to Vancouver!

Very nice!  Cabin looks typical WS other than the ceiling and Space Bins.  Was their a noticeable difference in cabin noise compared to the 737-600/700/800s?

It is much quieter than the NG's, even during cruise.
