I saw only 1 XD40 left at Westwood

Interesting. What time? I'm assuming 1230-1245ish?

11:00 AM 1989 and 2013 departed, leaving 1 EZ Rider and 2 white D40LFR's.

From last Thursday:

Came across this news article published on May 4th, You can see the two XD40's (1986 and 1981) and one of the EZ-Rider's (1996), Well now we know that 1986 actually exists!

Very interesting, but you forgot to put the link in. At one time 1986 was skipped due to a highway coach at Diversified with the same number. Maybe with one of the later order of XD40 buses, they numbered a bus 1986 once the highway coach was retired. It would be interesting to get a VIN list to see if 1986 was part of a later order.

The Midis are looking extremely sharp in WOOSH scheme, and never know they got 35' version instead of 30', thanks for sharing!

Fort McMurray saw transit service return on Friday, June 10. I didn't realize the service had returned until I saw a route 11 after I was already on the Red Arrow. 3 routes, the route 11, and temporary routes 101 and 102.

I'm not sure about this temporary route 21. I didn't see it that I'm aware of during my time in Fort McMurray, although, there were certainly a good number of Whoosh buses running shuttles and what not all over the place.

Has anyone found out yet what the numbering scales are for the newest buses in service? So far we know the EZ Riders are # 1995 and 1996 and it seems the XD40s and MD35s are all scattered after that? XD40s # 1997,2002, 2007, 2008, 1986(which we still dont know the year) and the one MD35 we know is # 2013. It would be nice to be able to update the wiki for the newest buses.

New transit services planned for rural hamlets

By Cullen Bird, Today staff
Thursday, March 30, 2017 6:30:26 MDT PM

Rob Billard, director of public works and transit services, told the Rural Committee during a Tuesday meeting the municipality would start a pilot project of twice a week round-trip bus rides from Conklin and Janvier to Fort McMurray and back, instead of the current once-a-week service. The pilot project will assess demand for the additional service, Billard said. Anzac has had twice-a-week bus service since February.

The extra ride for Conklin will be on Wednesday, and the extra ride for Janvier will run on Friday. The start date for the pilot project is still being decided, Billard said, but will be in the spring.
[...]
Both Fort Chipewyan and Fort McKay have said they are interested in having bus services, Billard said.

A meeting with Fort McKay residents will be held before putting out a Request For Proposal (RFP).

During the spring, summer and fall months when more Fort Chipewyan residents travel to Fort McMurray by air, buses will stop at the old airport terminal to pick up Fort Chipewyan arrivals who would otherwise have to take a taxi. The service will start April 18.
[...]
The proposed bus service would take residents back and forth from Moose Island to Fort Smith, eliminating the need to leave personal vehicles across the river, Billard added.

The RFP will go out in June, and the service is expected to run every Saturday starting October 1.

Looks like Woosh might have routes as far afield as Conklin 150 km south of Fort McMurray and perhaps Fort Smith in the Northwest Territories.

I received an updated fleet listing from Fort McMurray Transit, via CUTA. The wiki needs to be updated with:

  • 1995 to 1996 --> 2014 El Dorado EZ Rider II - 25 seats
  • 1997 to 2008 --> 2015 New Flyer XD40 - 39 seats
  • 2009 to 2012 --> 2015 New Flyer MD35 - 32 seats
  • 2013 to 2021 --> 2016 New Flyer MD35 - 32 seats
  • 2022 to 2026 --> 2016 GMC 4500 cutaway, Glaval Titan II LF body - 16 seats

Finally, there is a bus 1986. It was part of the 2012 order of XD40 buses but had a different order number.

Woosh has launched two more pilot rural transit services.  One is a Thursday-only bus service between Fort McMurray and Fort McKay (58 km north of Fort McMurray). The other is a very remote Saturday-only bus service between Moose Island, AB, and Fort Smith, NT (174 km north).  In the summer residents of Fort Chipewyan travel by private boats from Fort Chipewyan to the nearest road on Moose Island in Wood Buffalo National Park. Now instead of storing cars on Moose Island they can catch a bus to Fort Smith. website.

These are in addition to existing rural services from Fort McMurray to Anzac (48km), Janvier (122km) and Conklin (155km) south of Fort McMurray and a recently established shuttle service between Fort Chipewyan and its airport.

I'm very curious to know how these rural services are operated. Do they use Woosh transit buses and Woosh employees driving, or are they operated by contractors with other equipment? It amuses me to imagine an XD40 on 174km of gravel roads between Moose Island and Fort Smith but it doesn't seem likely.

I would suspect that might be what the cutaways are for. They took delivery of 5 in 2016.

I've been on the winter road from Fort Mac to Fort Smith NWT.  That is not a fun ride - Fort Chip was the only civilization between Fort Mackay and Fort Smith.  Nice to see they're trying to make things easier for the residents up there.  Hopefully it works out.

No updates in two years...

Guess I'm about to change that ? I'm going up to Fort Mac for welding apprenticeship work in October. Anything i should look out for? Any requests? Should i try and find out if they dare have transit service in between the workers lodges/camps?

BUMP.

I *think* this is the bus and contractor they use for the rural service:

I had one hell of a time tracking this thing down! It definitely does not follow the routing on the Fort McMurray Transit website, despite having specific timing points etc. Needless to say getting photos of it is a crap shoot at best, so that is the best I could do.

Regular transit-wise, the wiki is accurate in that there have been no new buses delivered since 2016. For whatever reason, all of the 2000 series buses are now numbered as 19-1xx, with the xx being the last two digits of the original 2000 series fleet number. For example, 2015 XD40 #2007 is now #19-107. This affects the last order of XD's, the MiDi's, and the Glaval cutaways.

At least one of the two EZ Riders are still on property, however I did not spot either in service.

Will get the Wiki updated accordingly in the near future.
