Cobourg Transit will be receiving 1 30' Grande West Vicinity bus at a total cost of $431,095. the bus is being purchased through Oakville's contract with City View/Grande West which allows members of the Metrolinx Consortium to also purchase buses using that contract. The 2003 Blue Bird (bus 905) was scrapped earlier this year due to maintenance issues and it appears this bus is a replacement for 905.

Cobourg has also acquired an Arboc numbered 908 for WHEELS. It is plain white with just the lettering.

Both their new Vicinity, numbered 909 and EZ Rider, numbered 907, were out in service on Friday. The Vicinity has what appears to be a white LED sign (that hasn't been programmed, bless them), a Voith D854.6 transmission and an updated paint job. You will notice that the paint scheme for the body itself is white, unlike the ElDorado which retains its grey body paint.

907 returned to service after a couple weeks away getting repaired. 906 may be the spare now. When both ElDorados were being repaired, the service ran with their ARBOC (908) and their Ford/Girardin cutaway that are usually reserved for WHEELS duty.

Century Transportation has been awarded a new 3 year contract to operate both Cobourg Transit and the WHEELS paratransit service. The contract will begin January 1, 2020.

Century was the lowest bidder, the other 2 bidders were Tokmakjian and 947465 Ontario Limited (Voyago). While Century currently operates Cobourg Transit, the WHEELS service has been operated by BTS Network.

Cobourg Transit plans to convert their existing fixed route service into a on-demand system in early 2021 for a one year trial period. The one year pilot will be conducted in 3 phases building up to a full implementation of on-demand service.

  • RideCo software/booking app, vehicles operated by Century Transportation (current contractor)
  • Phase 1 - switch to on-demand after 6:00pm Monday-Saturday, and all day on Sundays.
  • Phase 2 - switch to on-demand for Saturday service.
  • Phase 3 - move to full on-demand service.
  • Existing bus stops will be used as pickup/dropoff locations as well as additional 'virtual' stops
  • Existing fleet of 3 30' buses (1 Vicinity, 2 ElDorados) will be used during the pilot. However if on-demand service becomes permanent following the pilot the 30' buses will be replaced with smaller vehicles more suitable to on-demand service.

The OnDemand pilot will be known as Cobourg Rides, in conjunction with Century Transportation and RideCo. It will begin with a soft launch on April 19, 2021. On June 14, service will switch to OnDemand for the remainder of the pilot, combining phases 1 and 2 of the original plan and moving fully to OnDemand.

This will replace conventional routes 1 and 2 but will apparently use conventional buses once fully rolled out.
