MNbusdriver
Does Greyhound still run any of the older MCI DL3s from the early 2000s? I used to see them all the time around Texas. Now I'm in Minnesota where I only see newer buses. I'm wondering if they got rid of all their older buses during the pandemic.

I went through the wiki and ran all the vins through bumper.com. I was able to find salvage records from the last 2-3 years for many of them. I think a bunch more are in a surge fleet of sorts with some being retitled as recently as 6 months ago. With the Flix purchase I wouldn’t be surprised if there is equipment ownership shuffles going on behind the scenes. Also the order for 360 Prevosts over the last 3 years was meant to replace many of the older units. They had a mass graveyard of them at the Chicago garage and probably other garages too. There appear to still be some G models as well on the roster. The oldest things out and about regularly now are the 86000+ Prevosts from 2009. There are a handful of D4505’s from 2006 captive to the southwest-Mexico runs. Greyhound is supposedly adding a lot of miles in June when the next run bid takes effect so some of these stored buses may come out of hiding. If we are truly going back to normal and my passenger numbers (I drive for a partner carrier but interchange directly with the dog) and the numbers in general seem to be up quite a bit then they’ll need the buses when summer comes. Incidentally I saw the first former Greyhound Canada unit running around the northeast on the tracker… 0635 which is a 2014 Prevost. So they already need those rolling. Good sign. MNbusdriver
Ok thanks for the information. I didn’t know if it was just my area doesn’t have them or if they are all gone now. That’s too bad I liked the old MCIs with Detroit engines. I guess they are trying to modernize their fleet

I do miss the sound of the Series 60 though if you floor a new Volvo D13 with electric fans like the new Prevosts have… it sounds similar.

What I miss is the sounds from the older Detroit Diesel 2-stroke engines, IMHO the greatest bus engines of all times. Unfortunately, their inherent pollution problems were insurmountable to continue their production.

The whine of the 8V92 motors and their smaller 6 cylinder transit counterparts was always something I looked forward to hearing as a kid. I’m a little too young to recall the 71’s with any clear memories.
traildriver
My favorite sounds came from the straight 6-71, which powered the GM PD-4104, and earlier coaches. I especially loved listening to one of those engines accelerating a truck with a ten speed Roadranger tranny... The later 6v-71 models like used in the MC-2 didn't sound as good is the straight 6 did, IMHO.

Somehow when I imagine they need a Diesel engine sound for some sort of production this is about what they use. It’s quintessential “this is what a Diesel engine sounds like”. Very nice. I may be wrong but I think either that bus or another of his is ex Greyhound.

Very likely...not many other companies ran "Silversides". The avatar looks like GL...
