LRT
I believe this is quite fitting and needed for nostalgia purposes. To the best of my knowledge due to COVID-19 the U2s have been sidelined and stored at Haysbro storage and I believe there’s a bunch at OBMF. Anybody that may know more about this can correct me if I’m wrong. (I’ve been outside the loop for a while) There’s a total of 22 cars stored at Haysbro and have not been in use since March. As far as I understand they’re all active just being stored.
chills_on_the_train
I've resumed working downtown since the start of this week (I could continue working from home, but honestly my kids are driving me nuts). Boarding the Red Line at Crowfoot at 8:30AM, I'm seeing maybe 10% of the usual number of people on the trains. Perhaps less, when you consider that they are 3-car consists instead of the usual 4. The Park N Ride is shockingly empty even at that time of day. Doubtless more people are choosing to drive, but working from home and massive layoffs continue to take their toll. I wonder if it is possible that the huge demand hit that the Ctrain has taken will be what finally retires the entire U2 fleet? Especially once the SD-160 refurb program finishes, and the Series X purchase starts delivering vehicles. I find it sadly hard to imagine a situation where downtown Calgary returns to anything like even 2019 levels of activity anytime soon.
LRT
I’m pretty sure they’re only allowed to retire an ex amount of cars depending on there condition. The COVID downturn shouldn’t effect the fast tracking retirement of these cars. it’s a well deserved rest for these cars.
Gsgeek540
Everything on track 1 and 2 at Haysboro hasn’t been run since the current signup started. Usually every weekend, rail service staff take each car consist to Somerset and back to ensure they are still operational. Tracks 1 and 2 were full until a couple weeks ago when a train developed an electrical fault and went back to Anderson and I don’t believe was ever replaced.

Yeah northwest and west trains are definitely not seeing as much ridership but if you go to the south and northeast, you will see packed trains at rush hour, sometimes other times too
LRT
A 4 car U2 consist (2073 2009 2013 2061) almost came online this afternoon from Haysbro but at the last second.. it it got changed off for a 4 car SD160 Controll didn’t want it to go out because it was an all night key. 1
SidneyTransitfan
I took a look at Oliver Bowen today. 2063 is inside on track 21. On the rear track were 2075, 2065, 2083 and 2081 coupled together, with 2005 further up all by itself. I'm really hoping to see the U2s come out on the blue line before I go back to BC for the winter in two weeks' time.

Whats wrong with an all-night key, for control not to send it out? Minus maybe homeless people passed out all over the train, or something... with such high mileage, wouldn't it be easier to spare the newer vehicles from wear & tear, and just put the U2's out instead? Especially if they're about to go the way of the dinosaurs?
Nick B
I'm almost certain that an all day key having a consist out for many more hours of the day, through peak periods, possibly tougher weather conditions, etc, would put much more wear and tear on the cars than maybe a dozen or so homeless/drunk people at night. My wild guess would be garage stacking in order to avoid having to send out a high mileage U2 consist from early morning till evening on an all day key the next day. I have next to no knowledge of how the system operates though.

Also it was a hot day and those things get extremely hot rather than air-conditioned counterparts.

Gsgeek540
I saw a 4 car U2 consist making its way up to A114C (south call on at Anderson Garage) at 13:30 this afternoon. LRT or Pantograf, i think you 2 are the only insiders in the south this signup. Any word if this was a revenue train?
