Also it’s been exactly 1 week and I’m still puzzled about the “mass retirement” of the remaining OGs. Why was there no announcement ahead of time? Was it a last minute decision by the TTC/Queensway or was it planned to keep it low key so that no transit gurus would make a big fuss about it? Anyone with further knowledge or insight please share.

Ah... 8094... looking at the photo, it reminded me of the first time I worked a super early run of the 111 East Mall crew I worked,  which also began with a trip of 300S to Kipling Station prior to commencing the 111 trips. It was in that exact bus I operated that run.

when was the last time the retirement of a bus was announced ahead of time? The Orion Vs, and that was only because they were the last HF buses. The RTS, the D40LF, the earlier Orion VIIs, they were all pulled without anyone announcing it.

Their useless PR folk love posting stupid memes, but when it comes to something that could actually generate interest, discussion, and buzz, they couldn't care less.

Probably because your interests are not important. You are nobody, and your likes/dislikes don't matter. It's a bus. A bunch of plywood and fibreglass with a big diesel engine, who cares.

 

The old stuff is readily replaced by new plywood floors and a stainless steel frame. It's a big box with uncomfortable seats if you are lucky enough to get one, otherwise enjoy the bedbugs and roaches.

I am surprised that your account has not been banned. You have posted so much negativity and verbal diarrhea on the forum over the past year, which derailed a lot of otherwise normal discussions. If it was anywhere else, you would have been banned a long time ago.

 

Perhaps you need to find another hobby which does not result in you having a meltdown, and seek some psychiatric help as well. 

 

As far as having public announcements about bus retirements, I don't think that it is high on the priority list for head office in general. Buses come and go on a much frequent basis than rail vehicles, and the public does not notice it as much.

What reality? You sound like one of those highly intellectual cultural "analysts" that so keenly remind us all the time about how "facts don't care about your feelings".

If your opinion even remotely resembled reality, they wouldn't have announced the (well attended) final trips of the subway cars or streetcars, either, and they certainly wouldn't have saved any equipment, and there wouldn't have been big crowds visiting every facility they open for doors open and the United Way open house every year. And if all a bus is is a bunch of plywood and fibreglass, why exactly are you on a forum for people who are interested in transit? Trolling transit fans hardly seems like a constructive use of your time.

And even if for some reason all of your above arguments were true (which they're not), the retiring of another batch of diesel buses would be a great opportunity for more green PR. The fact that they didn't announce anything doesn't make any sense at all.

One of the things that I will not miss about the Orion 7s, their air-powered windshield wiper motor. Some of them were so finicky and annoying to set up to ideal function. The electric-powered wipers on the NGs are so much better. 

 

Are the Orion 7s the final make and model that used the air-powered windshield wipers?

No actually, even new flyer LF and LFR (not sure about Xcelsior) also had air wipers.

Speaking of plywood, when I got a chance to see 5707 in 2022, I noticed a small hole in the floor, and was surprised to find out it's plywood underneath the floor, and how thin the floor appeared to be that the hole went all the way through. I thought the metal frame under the floor was supposed to be much thicker than that. Which makes me wonder, do the T1s and TRs also have plywood under the floor, and other wooden components hidden from view (i.e. structural elements between windows and inside the end caps)? You'd never know it by looking at their plastic interiors (all cars since the M1s).

Every public transit vehicle is a bunch of engineered materials, held together with some sort of metal frame. Fishbowls were awesome because they were sorta built like aircraft.

 

The plywood in the floor isn't typically the stuff you would find at homedepot, a little thicker and the adhesives are a little more resistant to moisture. Some fire retardant cancer causing stuff thrown in there for good luck, plus all the stuff they spray fairly regularly for bedbugs and roaches.
