COVID-19 and the tour bus industry

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know how badly hit is the tour bus industry as a result of COVID-19? I am assuming there are not many bus tours as a result of social distancing protocols.

I'm sure it would go very much the same path as the airline industry with lots of layoffs, fleet reductions, and sharp decrease of passengers, which is exacerbated by the Canadian border closure to non-citizens/residents.

Lay Offs are already taking place & buses have been parked & license plates cancelled. I'm sure there will be companies declaring bankruptcy

Everyone parked the buses and deplated at this rate. I'm going on my last week of work just to prep the buses to be parked, disconnect batteries, and lock up, and get laid off.

This pandemic has such a widespread affect on our society and economy, from its highly infectiousness as a virus to its devastating impact on our economy... Hopefully better times are not too far around the corner...

The economy has been through tough times before. We need to focus on protecting and healing ourselves, then worry about the economy. The economy will not recover if the people don't recover. Hopefully the 'corner' is not too far around the corner..

Another unfortunate downside that was happening when the virus wasn't as bad was certain companies undercutting. Not naming names but a couple of companies went around and tried to offer way cheaper rates for a bus to bigger tour companies and wholesalers. As they lost work they tried to drum up business and undercut. Hopefully once everything goes back to normal, there is enough work for everyone.

Sorry to hear that you will be laid off! Hopefully we will be able to flatten the curve soon by social distancing. Everyone, remember to stay 2m away from everyone you see!

Its honestly depressing and looking like I won't be back to work for a couple months at this rate. Going to be a rough summer season.

Hopefully the new EI measure will help you get through the summer!

3 companies that do Safeway Tours have laid off their drivers. Angel Tours has also laid off their drivers. Haven't heard if Coach Canada will lay off those on the Charter Board.

Companies that have laid off drivers, have suspended Insurance coverage (Fire and Theft coverage only) and majority of lenders have shifted payments on newer buses by only charging the interest only. Mortgage lenders for yards have also shifted payments.

A Tour company called Conway Tours, they use Academy buses, has shut down for good citing COVID-19.

The only bus companies to shut down for good would the ones that can't survive after COVID-19 is no longer a pandemic which is yet to be seen. There could be some fears with travellers after COVID-19 is no longer a pandemic.

Companies that are applying for loans with the SBA or Government loans with the BDC are experiencing back logs in getting approved for funding.

Homeland Security deems for-hire transportation as an essential service:

Quote

In an historic move, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) added the for-hire transportation industry to its list of “essential critical infrastructure workers,” a vital designation for fleet operators amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
