LilZebra
What is needed at WT at several points/nodes is an off-board fare payment system. This is difficult to iimplement on a bus system because it lacks the turnstiles that rail systems typically have.Still, I can think of a few places where off-board payment would speed boarding by installing machinery to "juice up" a Peggo card, get a transfer etc... All Transit Terminals at regional shopping centres - Poio, St. Vital, KP On the Graham Ave. Transit Mall - eastbound Graham at Fort (Cargill), westbound Graham at Vaughan (Aluminum Sound), northbound Vaughan at Graham, eastbound Graham at True North Sq. Univ. of Manitoba Stn. Portage Ave - westbound and eastbound Portage at Donald, westbound Portage at Memorial/Colony, eastbound , Portage at Fort, eastbound and westbound Portage at Tylehurst (Polo Park) Main St. - southbound Main at Assiniboine, southbound Main at Union Stn., southbound Main at Winnipeg Sq. SirAndrew710
Westbound Portage at Spence (U of W) could benefit as well, owing to the sheer number of students who board there. Sometimes it takes upwards of two minutes for the people who take the 21 to scan their peggo cards. Even when there aren’t any technological glitches, misreads or whatever else. However, I see potential for abuse of such a system, considering the high rate of fare evasions even at such stops as Polo. Perhaps such machines could print out a slip that passengers would show to the driver upon boarding?
MMP15
Introduce all door boarding at u of m station. Peggio = board any door, cash/ticket = front door only
jhood135
From what I’ve heard, WT wants to move towards all-door boarding on at least The Blue Line, and install fare gates at RT stations in the long-term. I think the TMP also briefly discusses paying by an app on your phone.

Yes, we use this technique (compass card through all doors + cash/ticket through the front door) but only on our rapidbus routes

Does the driver open it? Winnipeg is a cold climate, too cold for the back door of a bus to sit open any longer than absolutely necessary. Maybe in Winnipeg a rear door a person outside at the stop can only open with their peggo card?

I assume there is a button near the door lever that enables all door boarding but that's more of a question for a CMBC bus driver such as @MCW Metrobus

Activating this switch changes the behaviour of the rear doors when the door handle is used. By default, turning the door handle to the "rear door open" position will activate touch bars (or motion sensors, in the case of some buses) on the doors which allow passengers to open them from the inside if they want to alight. With Rapid Mode activated, the rear doors will physically open as soon as the door handle is turned to the open position, and then a chime will sound before the doors close.

So it wouldn't be hard for Winnipeg Transit to have the same system in other words as most Vancouver artics are New Flyer buses.
tctf101
Something else that would help the overwhelming amount of students boarding buses at U of M and U of W and taking forever for them all to tap their Peggo cards is to have supervisors either at the stop or on-board the buses to help collect fare and eliminate the need for buses to be held up at stops for longer an example would be in Shanghai, China some bus routes still have fare collectors on board sitting right behind the back door, you can board at any door and pay them, If there’s a lot of people you can take a seat first and the fare collector will come to you after the bus starts moving
Mark Walton
Ottawa uses all-door boarding on artic and double-deck buses, for passengers with transfers or Presto cards. At 4 O-Train stations, bus platforms are in the paid area like most Toronto subway stations outside downtown and Vaughan, no need to pass through gates between bus and train.
