Plane spotting equipment

Recommended Posts

I am thinking of getting a good camera and lense(s) to do some plane spotting.

I’ve had a friend suggest a Nikon D3500 coupled with a 70-300 and for 900$ CAD that’s a little high. My range is 400 and under though which may be hard to do.

Have you considered used gear from a camera shop? That'll save you a few bucks. I snagged a Sony G series 70-300mm used. I would have been hard-pressed to afford the brand new price, but used was very reasonable from a reputable camera store. It was significantly better than the relatively cheap telephoto lenses I had been using (~$500-600 new).

Go to Kerrisdale

Awesome selection of affordable bodies and lenses

You could get a used D7000 or D3xxx and a 70-300mm for $500 or less.

You could also look at Canon's.  I'm a Nikon shooter, so as far as bodies go, the D3xxx's are a great beginners camera but I'd recommend at least taking a look at the D7xxx's as they are a bit bigger and have a few more features.  But seriously, go to Kerrisdale, talk to them and try a few bodies out to see what fits your hands best.

I actually live right next to Kerrisdale Cameras so I’ll make sure to try and stop by.

Unfortunatly the D7000 is out of my price range so that isn’t an option. I checked for used ones but there doesn’t seem to be a big used maker for them around here. I love how it is weather sealed though the D3500 which I’m really considering buying has a bigger battery, is lighter and a bit let bulky.

I managed to find a deal on amazon for a Nikon D3500 with a 70-300 and 18-55 lens For just under 600 with shipping. It seems almost too good to be true. I read the reviews and they seem legit. Could someone help me find out why it’s s’il cheap and what the trick is. https://www.amazon.com/Nikon-D3500-NIKKOR-18-55mm-3-5-5-6G/dp/B07GW23M7T?th=1&psc=1

Kerrisdale has the same combo on sale for 950$ whereas BestBuy (which is always overpriced) has it for 900$

I've never ordered anything from Amazon, so I can't comment on that.  As for the lenses, they're kit lenses so they're nothing special.  Having said that, there's nothing wrong with them but they'll be the first to go once you start getting into photography.

Again, I can't stress enough and going into Kerrisdale and actually talking to them, they'll give you much better advice and info then anyone on here.

As for the D7xxx being out of your price range, your OP said your price range is $750, there are two D7000 for $300 and $229.

I already have a d3500, but can anybody recomend a good 70-300 lens for under 400? can be used. In the GTA. Ive been told henrys, but is there anything else?

Lots to choose from.  Lots of used stores online that ship nationally.

Best place of info for specific equipment:

I've ordered a few products from McBain cameras, they're really good as well as Kerrisdale:

Excellent choice. Living in Edmonton McBain is my go to, although a friend of mine snagged some almost mind blowing deals at Vistek, but, their used selection is much harder to navigate online. He paid something on the order of $30 for a 70-300mm lens, or something around that range. We actually figure it was a typo and should have been $300, but, it was the system as $30 so that's what he got it for.

The other thing to keep in mind with the Nikon D3xxx and D5xxx series is that they do not have built in autofocus so you are limited to lenses that have the autofocus built in to them, so that limits your options, especially if you're on a budget.

Is there a way of knowing if a lens has autofocus built in?

Update!

Got a Nikon D3500 around Christmas time along with an 18-55 and a 70-300 lens.

I have only been out planespotting once since I got the camera and it worked great(pics below). Hoping to go out to YVR again this Friday
