2019 Transit Fanning goals

Recommended Posts

Leave your goals for transit fanning here. Two of my goals are photographing other GTA transit systems and broadening my inventory of memorabilia.

I would like to ride on more TTC hybrids from Mount Dennis and Wilson. I would also like to ride more clrv, alrv, and flexities. I believe I have around 5-8 flexities left to ride on between 4400-4449.

I would also like to cherish the ALRV before their conversion to soup cans.

Photograph as much of the TTC 7900s and 8000s as I can is the only one that comes to mind. And get more photos of the Novas with the new driver windows, including hybrids.

Another four-continent tour for me just like in 2017. Definitely lots of time in the Southern Hemisphere to escape the brutal Canadian summer.

Ottawa:

  • The Confederation Line

Vancouver:

  • New double-decker buses

London:

  • When the Crossrail Elizabeth Line finally opens, I will ride the entire line, explore all the new stations, and lots and lots of photos.
  • Overground Class 710
  • And maybe Greater Anglia Class 720.

Helsinki:

  • Ride the Länsimetro extension that opened in November 2017. Will explore all stations and lots of photos.
  • More photos and video of their fantastic VR commuter rail system.

Hong Kong:

  • Ride the Tuen Ma Line extension if it opens (I doubt it will) (Tai Wai <-> Diamond Hill <-> Hung Hom)
  • New Rotem trains on the East Rail Line

Auckland:

  • More train and bus videos

Wellington:

  • Trains and their new double-deckers.

Aviation:

  • More videos of Air New Zealand's 787-9
  • Maybe also Air New Zealand's A321neo
  • If I transit through Australia between HK and New Zealand, maybe also Qantas' 787-9
  • Wanaka Skydive

This year I want to do more fanning in the farther away communities as I have been mostly sticking to 69 St Station and Westbrook Station (although I did take a ride on the 3 last December, which is something I should do more often.)

This year I would like to ride and catch as many pictures of the retiring Translink D40LFs, D60LFs and ORION Vs

My goal is to ride our new OC Transpo LFSs and get as many Orion VII hybrid rides as possible. The Orions will be retiring and will mark the end of an era at OC Transpo.

I actually have some soft spots for those buses. I like the actual bus itself but I think OC messed up by going hybrid instead of diesel. Had they went with the ISL and the B400R, they might have beaten the Inveroes that are also planned to be retiring, although not all will be retired.

Other plans? If time permits, I may go to Toronto and see what they have to offer there. I want to see what TTC buses are like, especially the OG VIIs and LFSs. I've never been to Toronto except for one time back in 2012 when they still had the later Orion Vs, D40LFs, and S50 VIIs running in full force.

STO (Gatineau transit system, although it does provide service into some parts of Ottawa) is pretty much LFS land. There's nothing of interest except for eight ex-Calgary Classics (used as spares currently) at the moment.

The rollout of Flexity cars on all routes should be complete this year so I hope to ride them on the full length of all routes where I have not already done so: that is, the 501, 502, 503, 505, 506, and 511.

I want to track down and ride each model of CNG bus Calgary has (XN40, 2013 LFS CNG, 2018/19 LFS CNG.

I also want to ride 7558 (if she isn't gone already), as well as some more 1996/1999 D40LF's.

If I visit Edmonton, I want to ride some D60LF's and some 1998 D40LF's.

So now that the first quarter of the year is nearly over, how's everyone doing on meeting their goals?

I've completed my photoing of the 7900s (my total is 75/80) and I'm well on my way to finishing the 8000s (79/100). With the Nova hybrids out of service for a while it was getting a bit dicey but I've managed to grab some worthwhile photos of them by now too.

For buses I managed to ride a few more hybrids in the 10 11 12 13 14 range, a 40 ft Nova (8734), an Orion VII NG diesel (8121), and several Nova artics.

For subways, I rode on 2 T1’s and some TR’s.

But I have definitely been able to ride on the LFLRV. The 512 always gets units I have not ridden on yet. Was able to finish the 444x series with a ride on 4447. I still have 4401 4412 4421 4422 4426 4427 4428 4432 4434 left for the first 50 units, and a whole bunch of units above them.

Sadly, I have given up on riding the CLRV and ALRV. I rarely get to go down town to ride on the CLRV, and I don’t think the ALRV will be back in service for a while. The only unit that I am still on the look out for 4003, which is the only SIG unit I haven’t ridden on yet.

Not including retired units, I still have about 30 CLRV units to ride on, and I have only ever ridden on 4 ALRV 4200 4221 4225 4248. Last ride was 4221 on 511, just when it got back into service in the summer of 2018.

* Figure out whether TheRide uses cutaways on fixed routes (the 67)

* Ride CATA (after getting to Lansing solely by transit)

* Finish mapping DDOT on OpenStreetMap

* Figure out a reason to be in Port Huron, then ride BWAT, hopefully one of their Orion IIs

2019 late spring/early summer - finish off assisting recommissioning this long coming PCC car that I helped get running back in late 2019.

2019 late fall/winter, exact timing to be determined - depending on where retired CLRVs end up, put together some care packages of basic electronic instruments and a crash course on electronics.

So far, I've booked on British Airways and Finnair between Toronto and Hong Kong, stopping at London and Helsinki on the way. The trip will take place May to August. Have not booked any flights to New Zealand yet.

A few more goals I haven't mentioned yet, some of which are not transit related:

  • Count Me In summit, May 17-20 (https://www.countmeinsummit.com/)
  • Given the ORR's recent conditional approval of the Overground Class 710, they will likely enter service next month, so I'll definitely be filming them (https://twitter.com/railandroad/status/1116693293931421698)
  • Singapore Airlines Boeing 787-10. Between Hong Kong and Auckland I will book on SQ with a short stay in Singapore.
  • New Zealand: Will likely book on at least one trip with Haka Tours, one of which will explore all ski resorts in the South Island between Christchurch and Queenstown.
  • U-Fly Wanaka
  • October onwards: British Airways Airbus A350-1000
  • December: TfL Rail will begin Class 345 operation between Paddington to Reading, before the main tunnels open between Paddington and Stratford/Abbey Wood.

Here were my goals mentioned previously:

I've got a trip next week to Calgary and I'm planning to get some of Banff's D45 CRTs (if they're going to be in service as scheduled) and Vicinitys, CT's D40LFs, LFS CNGs, XN40 demonstrators/2013s, and their Siemens U2s.

In July, I'll be heading to Montreal, Toronto, Boston, and New York. I'll also be visiting Quebec City, Ottawa, and Gatineau as well.

Planned way to travel between cities:

Air Canada or WestJet to YUL from YVR, drive/train to Toronto, Porter from YTZ to EWR, Cathay Pacific JFK-YVR (using points!!!)

Priorities:

Montreal:

(STM and EXO): LFSe and LFSA as my STM priorities, EXO (both buses and rail vehicles)

Gatineau:

MCI Classic, LFSA HEV, 2nd gen LFS HEV, FIshbowl (not very likely)

Ottawa:

OC Transpo: D40i, new LFSs, D60LF, E500, new Line

Greater Toronto:

TTC: LFS HEVs, Orion VII OG (Diesel and Hybrid), LFSe & XE40 (if they're in service as scheduled), LFSA, CLRVs, ALRVs (heard that they may be coming back in the summer?), Heritage Streetcar Fleet

Billy Bishop Shuttles: any

Miway: D40/60LFR, D40LF, LFS, LFSA

GO Transit: any I guess

Brampton: D40LF, ZUM

YYZ Airport buses (going on the airside tour!)

YRT: D40LF, Van Hools, Viva buses, Eldorados

UPX

New York City:

MTA: RTS (if they don't all retire as scheduled), XE40, Proterra Catalyst E2, C40LF, older D4500, Orion VII OG, XDE40, XN60, any demonstrators they might put in service as a surprise (other than the electric buses)

Boston (MBTA):

AN460LF, AN440LF, D40LF, XE60 (if delivered by then)

Martha's Vineyard (VTA):

MD30/35, K7, K9S, XD40

Yeah I've got a huge shopping list. Hopefully I'll get most/all of this within the 2 week span that I've got.

EDIT: And for stuff in my area: new E500s for CMBC and the electric bus demonstrators (LFSe and XE40)

So you're just gonna skip right over the Hat, are ya?

Don't you wanna see a C40LFR? Or an XN40 that isn't crappy?

It's a pre-arranged group trip so unfortunately can't. We're going to Calgary via Golden and Banff and returning the same way through Golden. Maybe I'll go further into the Prairies next year.

Also, I live with C40LFRs and XN40s running around me. I take at least one every day. 😬

Just sayin, last C40LFRs built for a Canadian operator...
