If these buses can survive winter in AB, this is nothing but win-win for all.

Surviving a winter in Alberta is just the tip of the iceberg. St. Albert's already have, and Edmonton did winter testing successfully.

Some interesting background/additional information in this news article:

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/calgary-transit-electric-shuttle-bus-1.6065653

Calgary chose to procure shuttle vehicles because other jurisdictions in Canada, including Toronto, have tested regular electric buses. Alm said Calgary's shuttle routes are some of the system's longest, which will really put the electric vehicles' battery life to the test.

[…] Next on the agenda before the buses arrive is to decide what routes these buses will test, and to secure and install charging stations at bus barns.

We selected engineering firm Burns & McDonnell to supply, design and install electric bus charging station infrastructure for our pilot project. We’ll be installing a charging station inside our Springs Gardens garage in 2022. We chose this site for the charging station because it stores and dispatches our existing shuttle bus fleet, so it made sense to base our new electric shuttles in this location too. As well, the garage has capacity to accommodate our 14 electric buses.

The charging station will enable us to simultaneously charge our 14 buses with capacity to charge 28 buses in the future. The chargers will deliver fast charging and will need only about two hours to fully charge our buses. Special charge management system software will manage power to the chargers, so we don’t exceed the facility’s electrical capacity limits. We’ll train Calgary Transit staff to operate the chargers.

The charging station will use charging cabinets and dispensers supplied by ABB, a leading global technology company.

We expect to have final blueprints and drawings for our charging station build in spring 2022, with station completion and operations slated for fall 2022.

Our Spring Gardens garage (located at 928 32 Avenue N.W.), opened in 1975 and expanded in 2015, includes body, machine, and heavy-duty mechanical shops as well as an administration office.

If the XE40 survived the winters in Winterpeg  then Calgary should have no issues

One of the suburban transit systems in the Montreal region is testing a small fleet of BYD electric midibuses at the moment. Haven't heard of any breakdowns due to winter or cold so far …

You haven't heard any stories of them breaking down in service because they rarely leave the garage in the first place :P

Winnipegs have barely left the garage either IIRC, minus Route 20 runs to the airport, all of that time as well... unless Calgary short-turns buses at SH, or builds a terminus charging station (MAX routes, Route 3 come to mind), it'll be kind of hard to maintain those buses in regular service, especially on random dispatches to places without charging stations. Unless thats the plan? Throwing charging stations at Whitehorn, Brentwood etc?

Gotta remember this initial order is shuttle buses. At this point, Calgwry is still commited to CNG for its conventional fleet. The advantage of having them on shuttle buses is 85-90% of the work (on weekdays atleast) is garage to garage, 1 operator, 6-8 hours.

The plan is to have them on specific, strategically scheduled shuttle blocks that do not require a mid service charge and with low amounts of deadhead. A shorter 6-8 hour off peak block of work like a mid day route that is big bus during rush hour or an evening/late night shuttle run. The last i saw, routes out of north pointe, 78 ave, the core and lions park were shortlisted but nothing fIrm at this point.

Haven’t heard the plan for weekends at this point…

According to the Calgary Transit webpage listed above, the charging equipment for the pilot project is being installed at Spring Garden garage.

From that same page, here are some specs for the bus:

Quote

The purchased buses are shorter than our existing shuttles (28 feet versus 30 feet). The buses can carry up to 22 passengers and have a maximum range of about 200 km.

These are shuttles, so I can’t imagine seeing them on busy main routes.

200 km is enough range (roughly) to do something like Route 33 on a weekend (Max Bell Barlow to Vista Heights terminal, about 8 km round trip) for half of Saturday or the entire Sunday service span.

Barely enough to cover Route 414 on a weekday (approx 14 km round trip plus deadhead from the garage) but probably enough on the weekend, when service span is shorter.

Maybe the weekday evening blocks on Route 155 might be short enough, too? (That route is to complicated for me to measure at the moment, haha.)

I’m sure there are other small loops and short/medium length routes near Spring Garden that would work for these electric buses.

Clearly you haven't looked beyond Winnipeg? Like, 300 km north to Edmonton where electric buses have run as long as 15 hours on a single charge and only have deport recharging?

Ah, the weekday midday key on Route 91 would be a great candidate for this pilot project, I would guess.

The route 91 has some other issues (CAD related…due to the number of trips it does during the day strangely enough…) that impact the way it is scheduled. If that problem persists and they continue splitting up the 91 into multiple buses throughout the day than certainly it could be.

Will the 114 get any of the new Vicinity EV's? After all, the CNG demo was used exclusively on the 114 IIRC and the 2016's got some runs on it too.

The information in my previous post is as much as known at this point.. Even then, we are still nearly 9 months before they go in service. Alot can change.

Noticed the timeline has been pushed back around 6 months.

https://www.calgarytransit.com/content/transit/en/home/plans---projects/electric-bus-pilot-project.html

"Summer 2021 to Spring 2023

Identify appropriate routes, procure and install charging equipment, take delivery of electric buses

Summer 2023

Use on select routes, gather performance data"

The page previously had these dates as Fall 2022 and Winter 2022. (Internet Archive capture from April)

I was beginning to wonder what was happening with this.  Thank you for finding this information.

"The City of Calgary is deploying battery-electric public transit buses and associated rapid-charging infrastructure as part of a $13.9 million project supported by $7 million in funding support from ERA. As part of the project, Calgary Transit is conducting operations and maintenance staff training. It is also re-designing and re-scheduling transit routes in a large section of the city to accommodate electrification. In addition to the immediate GHG reductions through a one-time replacement of diesel buses, the project will also build capacity to continue and transition electric buses into the transit fleet on an ongoing basis. The lessons learned from the project will be actively shared with Alberta municipalities, transit organizations, and other Canadian municipalities. The project secured funding through ERA's BEST Challenge—a $100 million funding opportunity for biotechnology, electricity, and sustainable transportation innovations."
