1982-1984 Gillig Phantom VIN Check Number System

Recommended Posts

For a while the check numbers on the VINs for 1982-1984 Gillig Phantoms had been really confusing. Here's the standard check number pattern: (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, X, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9); serials ending in 0 = +7; serials ending in 00 = +3; serials ending in 000 = +1.

After acquiring a few builders plate pictures, this system does not work (the +7, +3, +1 part) on computing the other VINs. They use a slightly different system: serials ending in 0 = +6; serials ending in 00 = +1. This explains why some legit builders plate VINs work on autocheck, yet others don't because it doesn't follow the standard check number system, which seemed to come into use with the 1985 Phantoms.

I will give an example with some SamTrans 1984 Gillig Phantoms:

852's VIN is 15GCD0812E1080786. (Does not work on autocheck)5a3555f813943_852pic9(ChrisGilesAug.2016).thumb.jpg.e7c46bba5e453064cf9dfa19a299027f.jpg (It thinks the VIN is 15GCD081XE1080786).

867's VIN is 15GCD0812E1080801. (Works on autocheck).5a3554da6613d_867sEx-SamTrans1984Phantombuildersplate(SteveSouza12-2017).thumb.jpg.5fb7c4c91d78539d266788d09d5ce2ff.jpg

When using the standard system, it is impossible to get a "2" on 15GCD0812E1080801 when starting with a "2" on 15GCD0812E1080786.

Instead, this would have to be done:

15GCD0812E1080786 15GCD0814E1080787 15GCD0816E1080788 15GCD0818E1080789 15GCD0813E1080790 15GCD0815E1080791 15GCD0817E1080792 15GCD0819E1080793 15GCD0810E1080794 15GCD0812E1080795 15GCD0814E1080796 15GCD0816E1080797 15GCD0818E1080798 15GCD081XE1080799 15GCD0810E1080800 15GCD0812E1080801.

I've tried this in other cases and to my surprise, it actually worked. For now I have no clue what to do with serials ending in 000. Also I will only use check numbers from autocheck if they show that there are records. If there are no records, I will not use them, as they could be invalid (only in the case of the 1982-1984 Phantoms).

Serials ending in 000 = -1 for the next VIN's check number.

Example on this page: (https://cptdb.ca/wiki/index.php/Gillig_Phantom_'E_VINs'#E1080999)

15GCD0817E1080999 15GCD0816E1081000.

===============================================================

In the standard system (used on 1985 and newer Phantoms), serials ending in 000 = +1 ironically.

Example on this page: (https://cptdb.ca/wiki/index.php/Gillig_Phantom_'K_VINs'#K1082999)

15GCB0914K1082999 15GCB0915K1083000.

Here's a tip for Gillig VIN check number calculations. It works on 1982-1984 Phantom VINs especially well and also 1985-present Gillig VINs. There are check number patterns that occur with a change in length code in the VIN. The in 15GCD081... = 40 ft long. Something very important to note is that in order for these patterns to work correctly, there cannot be any other change in the VIN except for the length code and the 17th (last) digit in the VIN, which can only increase by 1. Also the proceeding VIN cannot end in 0, as that changes things up for the check number increase. (i.e. you cannot use this system for xxxx179 to xxxx180)

So here are the patterns that occur:

Going from A to B = +6 for the check number: 15GCA0817C1080212 to 15GCB0812C1080213. (2 acts like a 13 in this case).

Going from B to A = +9 for the check number: 15GCB0911G1081476 to 15GCA091XG1081477. (X acts like a 10 in this case).

Going from B to D = -1 for the check number: 15GCB0816C1080180 to 15GCD0815C1080181.

Going from D to B = +5 for the check number: 15GCD0812E1081018 to 15GCB0817E1081019.

Going from A to D = +3 for the check number: 15GCA0812D1080718 to 15GCD0815D1080719.

Going from D to A = +1 for the check number: 15GCD0816D1080714 to 15GCA0817D1080715.

For Gillig Phantom School buses, they only use C & D in for 37ft & 40ft.

Going from C to D = +6 for the check number: 15GAC0919J1030383 to 15GAD0914J1030384. (4 acts like a 15 in this case).

Going from D to C = -2 for the check number:

Example 1 ~ 15GAD0411K1030433 to 15GAC041XK1030434. (1 acts like a 12 in this case), (X acts like a 10 in this case).

Example 2 ~ 15GAD0914H1030220 to 15GAC0912H1030221.
