9924
Would it please be possible to disable the merging of posts feature when you post to a topic? For example, I wanted to quote another users post and reply to it and then post a different topic related to the thread on its on - but every time I keep posting the second topic - it merges that with my previous post which is completely unrelated. Its very frustrating and makes posts disorganized and cluttered.
Transit geek
I am getting a slightly different issue. If I rapidly press Ctrl+Enter twice when I attempt to submit a post, the content is inserted twice in succession in the same post, like this. 9924
Still no change on this silly thing of merging posts, huh?

awstott
Space out your replies and then it won't merge you post. Or don't be in such a rush to be the first to post something and thing your post through before hitting submit?
captaintrolley
It's not that. Sometimes you reply to two different posts, but they get merged. I suppose one could reply to a post, and then go back and reply to the other one after a while. What is the length of time to wait so that posts don't merge? M. Parsons
I've found it helpful to have posts merge. I've used that feature intentionally.
captaintrolley
Just now, M. Parsons said: I've found it helpful to have posts merge. I've used that feature intentionally. Agreed. Depends on the topic and such. However, for example in the 'General Lounge' or 'Random Thoughts' the topics are most likely very different from each other and it is not helpful to have them merged. Maybe there could be an 'un-merge' in the tool bar or something?
awstott
It's only posts in the same thread that get merged. It won't merge posts across threads. It shouldn't be that hard to quote the post you're replying to, and than add your new comment below your reply. I run a message board on the same software as this one. This is what I have set over there.

If I reply to both they get merged, but rabbits and igloos have very little to do with each other.

However, like 9924 said, even if you want to start a new post, it still merges with the post that you've replied to.
M. Parsons
I think one question that needs to be asked is that by disabling merging, will it lead to more cluttering of the board? Will admin potentially need to spend time cleaning up? Will it lead to a reduced user experience on the board? OK, that is 3 questions. I get 9924's point, I've been in that position, I just posted later on.

You can do what @awstott said, which is highlight the respective posts, or parts of the posts you want to respond to, or, what I do is I just make a line with the underscore, i.e. this ____________________________________________________________________________________ The new 991.2 911 GT3RS was recently released. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Just essentially shows that I'm referring to something else. However, I find that highlighting quotes is good enough for me. Otherwise, it just becomes a convenient feature for users to increase post count. I just thought if there was a way to merge or unmerge on demand that would be a nice feature.
1604
Hey there, sorry this got missed. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. We did see this topic and had a discussion about it back when it was originally posted in December, but I forgot to follow up here. There are pros and cons to both sides of the function: it prevents a lot of clutter on the board and can be useful in some situations, but sometimes it's a nuisance. We're going to leave it enabled for the time being. I'd recommend just putting in a couple line breaks if your post is about two separate issues, or alternatively, you can wait for the 15 minutes to be up. 2
