Is there any particular reason why some certain 2001/2002 units (Balios buses) seem to not be able to display "MAX" while others can? I can see this being a major source of confusion for passengers since the MAX routes weren't publicly advertised by their 30x route numbers.

For the same reason, I also think there should be some active control in place to either avoid running the Vultron-equipped 7600s on the MAX routes, or use something like paper cards to clearly convey the MAX designation and route color on buses that can't display MAX on the destination sign.

I’m sure some of you are tired of seeing my MY posts haha.
Yeah the signage is awful. I’m on 7785 and it’s displaying “304 WOODPARK”. The bus after this one is a 7600 bus which I’m sure will display ROUTE 304. Every passenger asked if it was the max yellow. Someone at MRU asked if it was the teal.

I’ve seen 7700s with proper signage so I’m not sure why 7785 isn’t displaying it properly. I feel like so much work went into these projects, especially with construction, that this issue is almost undermining it. Imagine waiting for the MY in -30 weather thinking “wtf is 304, better keep waiting for the MY”.

Also, the 54 Ave Stn SB shelter/info screen is still not open. The bus is still not using the bypass during rush hours (it’s 17:30 right now and creeping on the Crowchild and Glenmore Bridge).

On the other hand- 14 St is barely moving so it’s nice to see the transit way helping buses go by smoothly :)

i apologize for the negativity - just expressing my observations.

The Route 30x problem goes beyond MAX Yellow. I’ve seen various people on Twitter chatting with transit CSRs about how confusing it is to have multiple designations for these BRT routes.
Searching for schedules on the website can be a little challenging without knowing the MAX route numbers. Using teletext is impossible without this information. I can definitely understand the frustration.

In all honesty, not trying to get the guy in trouble, you should call in a concern about this operator not using the bypass when it's like that during rush hour - hopefully then they can at least identify him and follow-up with him so he learns the proper rules.  They promised the residents of Lakeview that buses would only use it during rush hour, or if directed by Control, so this operator should be using the bypass.

I don't use MAX Yellow (or the old Route 18) enough to know if what this guy's saying is true ... can any of you verify?

To an extent yes. At the old stops you could wait inside the Bissett building for southbound buses and Bella Concert Hall for northbound buses. The heated shelters at the new stations are fine but the ones at the MRU station aren't big enough for the crowds that can accumulate there.

It wasn't CT's call to remove buses off the East Gate campus area. MRU's master plan mandated the removal.

Especially on a week like this, I can see why students would be upset. Compared to before, there's not really an upside to having to walk an extra few blocks in addition to not being able to wait inside an actual building.

I can't help but feel certain MAX stations could've benefited from having large shelters given their location. MRU, SAIT and UofC for example.

It could. However, lets think of the economics. If you choose not to put a heated bus shelter at a stop, given the demographic, are you going to lose any riders? In my opinion, you won’t. Given that most students that go to MRU are riders multiple transfers, that is like at unsheltered stops. Are you going to gain any riders for it? Possible but unlikely.

Is this the first reported use of an articulated bus on MAX Orange?

Turns out this was a replacement bus … but still cool.

The Orange actually has an all day artic key this signup.

I had an interesting experience on my regular MY trip this morning.

My driver this morning wasn’t the regular guy and the bus was an artic (important for the story). We laid over at the leisure centre for about 5 minutes as per usual (still ridiculous). The driver missed the transit way entrance and continued down Southland onto 14 Street. A guy in front of me yelled out “WHERE ARE YOU GOING”, and the driver waived his hand. The guy proceeded to the driver and they talked and he came back to his seat. We obviously missed 90th Ave and luckily no one was waiting or getting off. Think the story stops here? Lol.

We turn left into Heritage and into the transit way, business as usual. The driver misses the turn into 75 Ave and continues down into the hospital. Now the guy in front of me is enraged. We go up by the senior home area between 2 route 20 busses (on an artic!) and barely scraped through those tight turns and tiny roads. The guy in front of me starts yelling out directions on where to go and I was so amused. I think he even called 311 or someone to complain.

Anyway, I don’t know if I feel bad for the driver? I mean.. shouldn’t you know the route you’re driving? But who knows, maybe he got pulled into it last second and wasn’t familiar.

I thought that operators needed to be trained on how to use the transit-ways?

Although technically, it's just a regular road but wasn't there training done prior to the launch of MY and MP.

There was training for both what are you talking about?

Todays the first time, that I've EVER seen Teal with more than 50% passenger capacity, east of Heritage... it's always been 25% or less, whenever I ride it mid-day and on weekends, but this morning? Half the bus was full before leaving Deerfoot Meadows, and started to actually get packed, by the time it hit Heritage.

It's good, but this whole "end the route at Douglasdale in the middle of nowhere" thing... I've noticed, there is some ridership potential in between Douglasdale, the casino, various industrial, and 130th Ave. Why not just extend the MAX Teal to 130 Ave, and boost the ridership, while also removing the need for the 302 to have to stop anywhere between 130 Ave and Ogden? It might boost MAX ridership, and increase frequency of the 302, if it doesn't have to spend 10-15 minutes zig-zagging from there to Ogden. And if it can extend into a new terminus/bus loop around New Brighton, or at McKenzie Towne itself so the 302 could even potentially bypass the lights and stop directly on 52 St to force transfers, even better for MAX ridership and 302 runtimes (shaving off 130 - Ogden section, and McKenzie Towne pretzelwork might actually make it possible for the 302 to get to Downtown and Seton within the hour with 10-20 minutes shaven per way).

Kind of like what happened when CT cut out Route 112 Sarcee into two sections, it tanked, yet combining the two boosted ridership thanks to having one-seat trips... doing one-seat trips with MAX might help it out with Teal, by expanding it south, and by doing so - it would also free up the 302 from having to stop at every nook & cranny in the SE, and make it somewhat more like actual BRT.

My wording might've been bad.

I was saying that there WAS training for the MAX routes with transitways prior to launch. I assumed that operators needed this training before they would be able to drive these routes and not just ones pulled randomly at the last minute. Maybe in this case, no one else was available or perhaps the operator was just having an off day and made back-to-back mistakes on the same trip.

I could be wrong but i don't think you need specific training to drive those routes

While I was in Calgary over Christmas/New Year's, I was on a Max Purple EB from downtown on 9th Ave SE. At Olympic Way SE some idiot in his car held us up for at least 2 light cycles while the bus driver leaned on his horn. Finally the bus driver got out and yelled at said a**hole: "Pull around the block, get out of the f***ing way!". It was at least another 6-8 light cycles before Mr. Cement-Head finally did move; we continued at least 10 minutes late.

Its definitely needed around SAIT. Even the 19 is starting to get packed, and it cuts off around Deerfoot too.

Makes me wonder too, I know the train and two bus routes cover SAIT... but maybe SAIT could become an alternative terminal, for future bus service, outside of Lions Park? Incase ridership increases, it might be a good option to have a couple of bus routes terminate/begin at SAIT. Granted, 40 footers are hard to get onto campus... but maybe the shuttles, in the future? It could act as a hub for the MO, 19 and the train. That alone, could justify future bus routes having a SAIT terminal, as all modes of service (reg bus, BRT, LRT) would be covered as well.

The train station is pretty far from 16th Ave with no easy connection, unless you send them up and down the 14th Ave ramps and then cross the tracks, which would play havoc with traffic.

You'd also have to convince the Jubilee to give up a chunk of prime parking lot to build anything meaningful next to it.

Lions Park does its job just fine. Anyone who needs to get to and from SAIT has plenty of options already.

Good news/bad news. (I’ve personally seen how popular MAX Orange can be. The ridership part is the good news.)

P.S. I've just looked this up: Stop 5730 is Russett Road WB

And thats WITH the artic?! Oh wow.

Any changes for mid-Winter signup then, like extra buses on hand, or extra trips during rush hour? Or just waiting until Spring to change it?
