JATRAN - Jackson, Mississippi

MiExpress

Recommended Posts

To start, I have updated the JATRAN wiki page with a current roster as it was in bad need of updating. https://cptdb.ca/wiki/index.php/Jackson_Transit_System

Most recent deliveries are 2 30' Gillig low floors with 5 35' Gillig low floors to be delivered within the next year or so.

They have acquired 12 ex Sarasota County Area Transit (Sarasota, Florida) 35' Gillig Phantoms and placed them into service over the last few weeks. From what I've seen in photos they are put into service all white with JATRAN logo applied or with Sarasota paint scheme remaining and JATRAN logos applied. The 12 buses are:

788 - Ex Sarasota 4702 (2002)

789 - Ex Sarasota 4602 (2002)

790 - Ex Sarasota 4502 (2002)

791 - Ex Sarasota 4902 (2002)

792 - Ex Sarasota 3901 (2001)

793 - Ex Sarasota 4101 (2001)

794 - Ex Sarasota 4001 (2001)

795 - Ex Sarasota 3801 (2001)

796 - Ex Sarasota 3701 (2001)

797 - Ex Sarasota 4802 (2002)

798 - Ex Sarasota 4401 (2001)

799 - Ex Sarasota 4301 (2001)

Pictures from your resident Mississippi correspondent:

Cutaways 754 and 770 are both based on the now-defunct Chevy Kodiak heavy-duty truck, except that 754 has a Champion Challenger body, while 770 has a Glaval Titan II body.

Bus 727 is a now-retired ElDorado National Transmark RE 29ft.

For Silly Tilley, please note that buses 738 to 741 are 40ft. examples like bus 740 illustrated here.

Bus 744 is 1 of the remaining 8 in the 738-749 group that is a 35ft. bus.

Bus 769 is a ElDorado National E-Z Rider II MAX 30ft.  It is the final bus of the batch.

My online-exclusive JATRAN gallery is available here.  Enjoy viewing pictures for this really obscure agency!  I am also looking forward to picture the brand new baby Gillig buses as well as the ex-Sarasota Phantoms.

Hi!  I made an afternoon trip to Jackson's Union Station yesterday,  and managed to picture both new baby Gillig's of JATRAN, as well as half of the dozen ex-Sarasota Phantoms.  However, before posting the photo chronicle on that visit, I'd like your source to make a fleet number clarification on the Phantoms, as I've pictured both bus 797 and a bus that has fleet no. 4802 on it,   Therefore, bus 797 cannot be ex-Sarasota 4802.  I need this clarification as I plan to post a picture of each second hand bus side-by-side with the same bus in service under Sarasota's guise.  Many Thanks!

@Buzz2kb In looking at the roster Jackson sent me, it looks like 791 and 797 are listed as having the same serial number (21110871, ex Sarasota 4902). I was using the wiki to compare the Sarasota fleet numbers to the serials and likely missed that error. Sorry about that.

I can follow up, but my guess at this point, based on your observations, is that 791 is actually ex Sarasota 4802 (serial 21110870) just without Jatran fleet number displayed and 797 is ex Sarasota 4902 (serial 21110871). Please do let me know if you spot any other errors.

For the record, here is the original roster file I was sent by Jackson. As you can see, 791 and 797 were listed as duplicate serial numbers and there are a number of minor errors.

Here's my photo chronicle on my Friday's visit to Jackson, Mississippi to fan on the latest JATRAN operation.  I've managed to picture both of the agency's 2017 baby Gillig Low Floor no.'s 800 and 801. They are apparently placed on routes that also see/used to see Eldorado National EZ Rider II MAX 30ft. buses (As illustrated by bus 765 as route 8's second bus).

JT-r05-800-1.JPGJT-r05-800-3.JPGJT-r08-801-3.JPGJT-r08-801-2.JPGJT-r08-765.JPG

I have also pictured 6 out of 12 ex-Sarasota, Florida 35ft. Gillig Phantoms,  Here attached are buses 788, 791(?) that still displays Sarasota fleet no. 4802, 792, 793 795 and 797,  Pictures of all these buses except bus 797 while in service in Sarasota are also included sided by side to correspond their current JATRAN identities (4702, 4802, 3901, 4101 and 3801).  Remarkably, buses 788 and 793 still keeps the old yellow/orange stripes from a previous Sarasota livery, while 3801/795 is the only bus I've pictured while in overall white at both locations. Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures of bus 4902 while in service at Sarasota.

Also spotted during my visit are Gillig Low Floor 35ft. buses 742 (not attached in this post, but present in my gallery update) and 746 (not pictured in this particular visit but also previously included in my gallery).

So once again, here's the link to my JATRAN gallery:

JATRAN has recently seen an influx of both brand new and former Ride KC Gillig Low Floor buses.  It has at least 1 new 40ft. bus like 805 and 2 new 35ft. buses like buses 806 and 807.

The former Ride KC 40ft. buses are an interesting bunch.  Buses 816, 821 and 823 are all in base former-KCATA livery, while bus 820 is in a patchwork of KCATA and Ride KC colors  Finally, bus 819 is in base Ride KC livery.  While bus 816 is very likely to be former 2407 with Ride KC, and bus 823 is very likely to be ex-2417 due to its silver headsign (I've attached bus 2417 while in KCATA service), can anyone confirm the identities of ex-Ride KC buses now in service JATRAN (both their old and new fleet numbers)?

Im certain 816 is our ex-2307, unless it has an ISL in it.

The bus with patchwork is a 2300 bus, dont know exactly which one.

As for the rest, without interior pictures I can't be sure. Depends on seating and walls on the inside.

Those are all 2400 series buses.

The 2300 series (2003 models) had rear windows that didn't open.

Check out Oren's page. You can see the 2300s in our former glory. Plus I was told that JaTran got 2400s second-hand from a few mechanics and our fleet manager.
