The Trillium Line

Back in 2011 the city decided to expand the Trillium Line service to "try" and double the capacity of the line, meaning they'd need to acquire new trains. There weren't any Talents available on the market at the time, so they bought 6 Alstom LINTs instead.

Why not use them together? Not sure, but the Talents were also due for a full rebuild when they were retired, and I guess maybe the lifecycle costs just weren't worth it.

There are minor incompatibilities with the Talents and LINTs. The LINTs are wider at the door sill, so the platform gap fillers are narrower than the ones used on the Talents. If they were to be used simultaneously, a sill extension would have to be fitted to the Talents to use the narrower gap fillers.

But yes, the Talents were due for a refresh and it really doesn't make a lot of sense to run a mixed fleet at this scale.

The Trillium Line extension is now delayed and won't open until May 2023 at the earliest due to COVID-19. Line 2 replacement bus service will continue running until the trains start operating on a stable level.

I just uploaded a video while on board a double decker Route 99, filmed between South Keys Station and Leitrim Road (past Leitrim Park and Ride) containing two clips (July 2019 and August 2021). Consider this as a before-and-after footage of the Trillium Line Extension Project, as part of Stage 2 LRT.

Trillium Line extension has now been pushed to August 2023 due to COVID-19. Though I think it could be other factors such as labour shortages and supply chain issues getting required materials to build.

The goal is substantial completion done by the end of 2022. Testing and commissioning to begin early 2023.

To avoid a repeat of the issues that occurred in the first few months of Confederation Line opening, the Trillium Line requirements are going to be a lot stricter and with a longer time of testing before launch.

One key aspect is that there will be two weeks of planned simulated service and the required percentage is 98.5 percent reliability. This trial time period will also stress test the system along with covering different scenarios that can occur.

I still remember how Confederation Line required 12 consecutive days without any major failures with progress being tracked by day. If an issue were to occur on day 9, it would be addressed and the clock reset back to day one. Except that was not applied and simply the metrics to achieve revenue service was changed to meet the scheduled deadline. Leading to resources being drawn from other areas and struggling to figure out how to best handle the situation in a timely manner.

At the same time, actions speak louder than words. Especially trying to ramp up service when it isn't ready along with not being prepared has consequences.

For this to really work you need a independent company to evaluate the system when complete and ready for testing(chosen by the city), and not Lavlin the company that built it.

There was an independent certifier for Stage 1, in addition to the city and RTG.

This reads like a Beaverton article - only in Ottawa would this be deemed as ground-breaking news.

For the record, in Toronto new rapid transit services need to run a simulated service for a minimum of 2 board periods (3 months) before being opened to the public. And my understanding is that they run a similar length of time in Montreal.

Here’s some images that I took of the progress at the future Airport Station. With a bonus image of one of the two Stadlers that was tied down near Alert Rd.

I was there last week and the row is not even close to being finished around Bayview. The concrete has been poured but the ballast needs to be layed, and tampered down.

Signalling needs to be installed. At least 6 months before they can start testing. When is it supposed to open?

Should have been later this year (August 2022).

It's been reported previously that there is a 12 month delay. Time will tell if there will be any further delays.
