CTrain Station Renovations

Will this round of renos at Marlborough include track-level access? I really see no good reason not to include it - and the mall's objections, on grounds it facilitates criminals' escapes into the CTrain, are especially ludicrous.

The answers and reasoning remains the same as the last time you posted about this 3 years ago.

There remain 3 reasons why they opted not to extend that platform south to 5 avenue NE

The configuration of the intersection of 36 street at 5 avenue NE remains the biggest issue. Westbound traffic does not have access to a southbound turn at the intersection. Only Northbound, Southbound and Eastbound Traffic, whether its through traffic to the mall or to across the tracks NB 36 street NE, or to SB 36 street NE, are controlled by traffic signals. For that reason, pedestrian traffic is diverted to the southbound, non platform side of that intersection. If the platform was to be extended to 5 avenue, they would have to work with marlborough mall and colleugues at roads and signals to configure a pedestrian right of way accordingly. There is a significant cost to realigning the intersection. Marlborough is not prepared to allow WB traffic from Marlborough turn to SB 36 street NE so that hinders any reconfiguration plan right there.

The second reason is the alignment of the inbound and outbound tracks through 5 avenue NE level crossing. Immediately following the south end of the platform, the inbound and outbound tracks begin to move closer and closer together. By the time it reaches 5 avenue NE level crossing, its slightly over a train width of room for any sort of platform or pedx. This same issue is more noticeable with 26 avenue level crossing at Rundle Station. Whitehorn never had that issue because the tracks begin to come together just north of Whitehorn Interlocking. Tracks would have to be realigned at a high cost.

The security reasoning was echoed by Transit Public Safety, Calgary Police as well as Marlborough Mall personnel at recent transit staff and public consultations in regards to the renovations. Marlborough station currently has the third highest crime rate at any LRT stations along the system. Limiting entry and exit points was a key point in all three parties presentations and echoed by community members at large wholeheartedly. Pedestrian safety, in regards to regular vehicles, was another key point given the fact that in its current configuration, pedestrians are strictly prohibitted on the north side of 5 avenue level crossing and there is no through traffic from Westbound Marlborough Mall to 5 avenue NE. Pedestrian safety, in regards to an additional LRT crossing was, however, the biggest safety concerns. There have been multiple fatal and injury accidents at the pedestrian crossing at whitehorn station, and tens and hundreds of close calls. It has been said and put on the record in the past of the regrets of the south whitehorn station pedestrian crossing.

Having driven trains for the last several years and having struck a cyclist at Whitehorn station PedX, i commend transit for listening to affected stakeholders (transit staff, public safety departments, residents, riders, local businesses ,etc) accordingly. Clearly, this decision echos that safety is the number one priority, over convenience.

No kidding it's cramped in there.  One escalator, going up, and only two people-widths of the stairs are left, plus well over half the upper concourse has been blocked off.

Have to wonder why they're not moving the elevator... Given the security concerns there, that station would definitely be a worthwhile place to reduce the places someone can hide from public view.

Some photos of the renovations at Marlborough.

And the new ramp at Rundle. Some nice landscaping at the bottom of either side. The station construction here looks very near indistinguishable from Marlborough.

Will the down escalator at Marlborough be replaced? From some of the pictures I saw in that station, it might not be. That will make it about as useful as Tuscany, which has no escalators.

Only up escalators are better than no escalators. Heritage, Southland, and Anderson, all very busy stations, don't have and never had down escalators either. Neither does Whitehorn as of its renovations.

No intentions of replacing down escalators.

Tuscany doesn't have escalators based off of feedback from pre-construction consultations. The compromise was 2 no restriction (request using help phone) elevators in the station. They feedback since the station has opened has been fantastic. No escalators has virtually been a non issue.

No pictures, but I was briefly in Rundle station tonight. They've opened up the renovated side of the station and moved to working on the other side. It looks really good; very similar to Whitehorn.

What stood out to me the most are the new doors to both the station and the platform - very industrial and heavy-duty looking. They look a bit out of place.

Some photos of Rundle from a few days ago. I assume Marlborough is looking pretty similar at this point.

1.jpg

New platform doors. Not a fan. They're uninviting and already grimy because they show all the dirt and water stains.

Bottom of the station.

4.jpg

New door into the elevator corridor. Provides much better sight lines into the hallway. It looks like there are some new windows next to it too. I didn't venture into the corridor but it looks like they just painted the walls and put in some new floor tiles, maybe did something to the ceiling as well.

Old up escalator being dismantled.

Rundle and Marlborough Stations

Renovations to the interior of Rundle and Marlborough stations began on June 6, 2016. Both stations will remain open during construction and will be renovated at the same time. Construction is scheduled to be complete by the end of fall 2017.

Upgrades to the stations will include:

SAIT / ACAD / Jubilee Station

Renovations to SAIT /ACAD / Jubilee Station will begin in July, 2017 and are expected to be complete by December, 2017.

The platform will remain open and CTrains will serve this station as usual. However, the station head will be closed for renovations for approximately two months, starting mid July. During this time the station can only be accessed via the northwest entrance – view map.

We aim to open the station head in September for the convenience of students, but the opening date is currently undetermined.

Upgrades to the station will include:

  • New flooring, stairs and handrails
  • Improved lighting
  • Replacing older CCTV cameras to improve safety and security
  • Upgrades to electrical and communication systems
  • New signs
  • Refurbished elevator

Why are these stations being renovated and how is it funded?

Rundle and Marlborough – These are two of the busiest and oldest stations on our system. They opened in 1985 and are due for life cycle upgrades. The funding for these renovations was primarily obtained through grants from the Provincial government and City funding.

Anderson, University, SAIT/ACAD/Jubilee, 39 Avenue, Zoo and Barlow/Max Bell – In 2016 we received funding from the Public Transit Infrastructure Fund to complete CTrain station upgrades. These six stations were chosen for renovations based on their need for lifecycle upgrades.

SAIT station building is now closed off

You're suggesting they didn't have the technology to build a roof 30 years ago?

Yeah why don't half the stations have a roof? I never did get why that's the case in a winter city

Rundle Station last week:

rundle.jpg rundle2.jpg

Other side of the top of the building is now open. They really shrank the size of the former concession stand, it feels a lot nicer up there now. New lighting installed too. Not much has changed in the lower part since my last update, they're still working away on the up escalator.
