Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority new Buses ordered

Recommended Posts

Update: On October 5, 2015, the MBTA Fiscal and Management Control Board approved Authority for Action for a $52.6 million order with New Flyer for 44 60-ft hybrid buses to replace the 1001-1044 2003 Neoplan series buses. New Flyer was the only bidder. Buses will be delivered between mid-2016 and early 2017

The proposed contract also includes options for 200 additional buses (100 hybrid and 100 CNG) that could be exercised for up to five years from the awarding of contract through 2020. Exercising this option would allow for replacement of any remaining NABI buses and most of the 40-foot Neoplan diesel fleet between 2018-2020.

This is a low-bid procurement; the lowest qualified bid which meets the specifications will be awarded the contract. Once an order is placed, deliveries would be expected in 2016/2017.

Update: On June 29, 2015, the MBTA Board of Directors approved a $222 million contract with New Flyer for 150 hybrid and 175 CNG 40-foot buses. New Flyer was the only bidder. Buses will be delivered between July 2016 and June 2017. 118 CNG buses will be assigned to Arborway while 57 CNG and 150 hybrid will be assigned to Cabot. Buses will feature stainless-steel frames. These will replace all NABI buses and remaining 6000 series New Flyer buses. Some RTS buses are n

ow expected to remain in service until 2018 and not be replaced until either the option order or a separate new order is placed.

The award was approved by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation board of directors in Boston and includes a firm order for 175 compressed natural gas buses (XN40) and 150 diesel-electric hybrid buses (XDE40), plus options for an additional 200 clean diesel buses (XD40) and 200 diesel-electric hybrid buses (XDE40) over the next five years.
