TTC CLRV/ALRV updates and discussion

Interestingly, the ones reported out today by Transsee would be on the list of 18 holds reported by smallspy earlier.

The fact that they had holds on them doesn't necessarily mean that they are permanently out of service. Rather, it means to hold them back from entering revenue service pending the correction of some fault. (Of course, pending the resolution of that fault, they may then be pulled from the revenue fleet and put into storage if it is deemed to be too significant.)

The concern however is that there were 18 (!) of the 20 still listed in revenue service with holds on them at one time. Either they all came down with issues within, quite literally, days of each other - or that the mechanical staff ran out of time fixing them and had to put them aside for "later" pending other, easier repairs, allowing the number of holds to grow until it was almost the entirety of the fleet.

In any case, this really does not bode well for their longevity. The TTC had hoped to keep them running until next summer at least. I doubt that they will make it that long.

4217 (for first time in 12 days) and 4249 both out overnight and today, while 4240 was out briefly yesterday for first time in 19 days.

The end is nigh though.

Other cars still tracking that saw service since June are:

4200 - last on July 31

4204 - last on Aug 1

4207 - last on Aug 3

4225 - last on Aug 3

4226 - last on Aug 2

So 10 left maybe?

4229 and 4236 are both tracking at Hillcrest they were last seen in service in July.

Ah - there were 2 or 3 that did track in very early July. I'd meant to change the text to "last 3 weeks" - I'll fix that.

4229 was last seen 314 hours ago - July 31. I didn't consider that still tracking - but I guess it mightn't be dead yet.

4236 hasn't seen service in 34 days.

Just a snapshot ... but the total number of vehicles effectively remaining seems to closer to 5-10, than 18-20, which seems overstated.

4181 looks done. Missing part of its bumper and looked like it was being prepped to be stripped. Sitting beside 4202 right now.

That's a very quick turn around time! It last operated this past Saturday on the 501.

I believe you mistook it for 4182, which is indeed missing part of its skirt and is still sitting beside 4202. Had a walk through the yard today and noticed that 4218 and 4251 seemed to be missing a substantial amount of parts. I think it’s safe to say that these 2 cars will not see service again.

Thanks for the confirmation. On the topic of 4218 and 4251, are they the ones that are sitting in the middle of track 21 and 22?

Thanks for the updates! I have updated the front page and the wiki to reflect this info.

Where possible, I have gone back through the vehicle history on TransSee and produced the final date of operation for cars, and put it on the Wiki.

Not the best photo unfortunately (damn car) but here was 4221 last night. She looks lovely, I wonder how long she'll last in service before they pull her like they did 4207.

I thought short turns were a thing of the past? ?

It seems to be the only ALRV that's made it out in the past couple of days. So much for "more streetcars for CNE" theories.

The only thing I can think of is that there is a lot of maintenance being done to some/all of the 'active' cars, to prepare them all for going out in a bunch next board period. But I don't quite believe that.

There certainly are extra streetcars deployed on 509 & 511 for the CNE, but almost all of the extra runs are done with Flexities.

ALRV 4249 is on 511 Bathurst this afternoon, the first time an ALRV has made it on the 511 this year, as far as I know.

Not so; 4221 was out on the 511 for a couple of hours on August 19.

For a change of pace, 4249 is the only ALRV in service this morning, on the 501.

EDIT: 4226 and 4240 were also rolling around today, the former moving from Russell to Roncesvalles yards. 4240 went westbound on Queen this evening from Russell to Humber, not sure if it's service or not

EDIT 2: 4240 is the only ALRV today (August 23), on the Long Branch portion of the 501. 4215 joined 4226 at Roncesvalles overnight. Is there some kind of rule prohibiting more than 1 ALRV from being in service at the same time? :P

4221 was involved in an accident late last night, and sounds like it will be out of service for a couple of days at the least.

No ALRVs out yesterday evening or this morning.

EDIT: I compiled a list of the last known operational dates for all the refurbished ALRVs (less 4239) and any unrefurbished units which tracked on the trackers in the last few months. "N/A" denotes no service history since May 15, when TransSee implemented vehicle history.

4200: July 31, 501
4202: May 28, 501
4203: June 26, 501
4204: August 1, 501
4207: August 3, 501
4208: N/A
4210: N/A
4214: June 29, 501
4215: August 10, 501
4217: August 17, 501*
4218: May 20, 501
4221: August 21, 501*
4224: N/A
4225: August 3, 501
4226: August 2, 501
4228: N/A
4229: July 21 or 22, 501
4230: N/A
4232: May 16, 501
4236: July 9, 501
4237: June 22, 501 (June 23, 301 XM)
4240: August 23, 501*
4242: late May, 501
4243: August 10, 501
4249: August 23, 501*

Units marked with an asterisk have operated in the last two weeks.

Confirmed! There were at least 2 ALRV's on 511 this afternoon: I overtook 4221 while driving on Bathurst St and saw another ALRV (presumably 4249) going in the opposite direction.
