Decided to make a page for Bratislava - need opinions

Hi there,

Next month, I will be in Slovakia visiting family. During that time, I will be visiting their capital Bratislava a bunch of times, with the aim of photoing many pieces of equipment. I got to thinking and felt that I should create a wiki page for their transit system, because I know it well. I realize that this may be a one man project but it's something I'd be interested in doing.

However, their system is quite unique and it has a lot of odds and ends I've never encountered in any other system, so I'd like to get some opinions on how this should play out.

1. According to the wiki naming conventions, "Bus roster pages are to be titled with the transit agency name plus the fleet numbers." Many fleets in Bratislava have very scattered fleet numbers that would make it quite difficult to do this. For example, the legendary Tatra T3 cars have undergone many modernizations and rebuilds in which their fleet numbers were changed. The 1975 order originally carried the numbers 202–204, 207, 209–211, 213, 215, 218, 221–224, 228–229, but not a single one of those cars carry that fleet number today; now they are 7704, 7301, 7710, 7715, 7303, 7714, 8437, 7711, 7302, 7703, 7304, 7610(:2), 7602(:2), 7713, 7705 and 7719(:2). This is true of a great many fleets within the system, even newer ones. Additionally, many orders of this type of streetcar were received, and listing their fleet numbers would make it one hell of a long title. Would it be better to name pages for fleets like this something like "Dopravný podnik Bratislava Tatra T3 cars"?

1. B) Concerning standardization, if the above naming pattern was used, would pages for vehicles with simple and basic numbering patterns use that as well? (I.e. Dopravný podnik Bratislava Tatra T6A5 cars, as opposed to Dopravný podnik Bratislava 7901-7958")

2. What about two units of the same type of vehicle that carry the same fleet number? A trolleybus built in 1997 carried the number 6617, but was irreparably damaged in 2000 and scrapped. In 2002, an order of the same type of buses with the fleet numbers 6635-6638 had an extra bus tacked on - 6617(:2). Would the second 6617 be placed regularly in the fleet columns below 6638 under the title 6617:2?

3. In December last year, many old trolleybuses were pulled from service. The thing is, even though they are sidelined and will never run again, they have not been officially removed from the roster, and probably won't be for a long time - one bus was pulled in January 2014 and is still on the active roster. Fleet pages for agencies like the TTC indicate a unit's official retirement date, which a lot of sidelined vehicles in Bratislava don't have - what would be the best way to go about this?

4. Not really related to any of the above, but what is the Wiki policy on .png files? Every photo I've seen uploaded was a .jpg.

Thanks!

1. I think "Dopravný podnik Bratislava Tatra T3 cars" would be acceptable. There exists a page with a similar naming: http://www.cptdb.ca/wiki/index.php?title=York_Region_Transit_Flxibles

2. I think the second 6617 would probably get its own page. For example, SF Muni 6082 (1984 MAN artic) was written off a year after delivery. A second 6082 (a 1985 MAN artic) was it's replacement. There is a seperate page for the second 6082: http://www.cptdb.ca/wiki/index.php?title=San_Francisco_MUNI_6082

In the fleet column, it would probably look like this:

- 66XX-66XX

- 6617 (2nd)

- 6635-6638

3. Hmm, maybe you could make a section called "Inactive Roster." If not, you could put them in the active roster and put in the notes section that all units are inactive as of Jan. 2014.

4. .png is accepted.

I hope this helped and have fun on your trip.

Thanks for your input! You make some good points, the only one I'm unsure of is the 6617 thing.

All of these buses are the same type (6617-6638 and then 6617(:2)). For the TTC's page on their 2xxx Fishbowls, they had one page for all the buses that were rebuilt into the 2xxx number range, despite the fact that there were 4 different series (2000-2110, 2150-2155, 2240-2485, and 2700-2765, 2767-2858). I thought about doing something like this for this type of bus (a Skoda articulated trolley), but maybe splitting each individual order would be a better idea. The first order consisted of buses 6617-6621, which would get their own page, as would 6622-6626, 6627-6630, 6631-6634 and 6635-6638, 6617(:2). 6617(:2) wasn't a stand-alone delivery, it came with the rest of the 6635-6638 batch, so those would definitely have to be kept together.

No problem! I'm always here to help.

Hmm, maybe it would look more like this then:

- 6617-6621

- 6622-6626

- 6627-6630

- 6631-6634

- 6617 (2nd), 6635-6638

That could work as well.

Here's the page. So far I've gotten the fleet details for the trams and trolleys, and photos for the trams. I'll get around to doing the trolley shots later, and I'll hopefully photograph what equipment I'm missing next month. What do you guys think?

EDIT: Odd, it doesn't show any text when I link to it.

So far it looks really good! However, if "(:2)" means "(2nd)," then I would suggest changing those to "(2nd)" as it is more recognizable on the wiki. So far example, I would be able to recognize "6617 (2nd)" easier than "6617(:2)."

Also, be sure to include the first bus (for example 6617) as "6617 (1st)," as that is also a nice way to distinguish repeating fleet numbers.

Wow that is weird...

Are you aware of this page for Bratislava, I have found it useful for documenting my trips there.

http://imhd.zoznam.sk/ba/public-transport.html#

My Slovak photos are at:

http://www.michaeltaylor.ca/slovak.html taken from 2004-2010

Yes, I know of both of these pages. The first one I have been following since 2004, and I discovered your photos back in 2013, I really liked them. When I get around to creating them, would you like to provide some of your photos for the rosters?

Thanks for your comments! You're right, I should indicate the first 6617. However, the (:2) designation wasn't my idea. It's been used on many pages I've seen, such as this one:

No problem! Yep, it makes it easier to compare the 1st and 2nd 6617. Ah okay, I have never seen that before. :o

By the way, I found the problem with your page link. This link: http://cptdb.ca/wiki/index.php?title=Dopravn%C3%BD_podnik_Bratislava,_a.s. actually only includes 1 period in "a.s." and actually displays "a.s" without the second period. That is why it says no page exists.

Sure, choose the ones you like.

Cool, I'll have a go at them when I get back. Thanks! :)

On another note, does anyone get the following error when they go to the main page?

http://cptdb.ca/wiki/index.php?title=Dopravn%C3%BD_podnik_Bratislava,_a.s.

Database error

A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software. The last attempted database query was:
(SQL query hidden)

from within function "Interwiki::load". Database returned error "1267: Illegal mix of collations (latin1_swedish_ci,IMPLICIT) and (utf8_general_ci,COERCIBLE) for operation '=' (localhost)".

EDIT: Works again.

I've finished my first page! It's a page on the iconic Tatra T3 streetcar. The only changes I'll be making are photo additions or vehicle disposition changes as and when they occur. Tell me what you guys think!

http://cptdb.ca/wiki/index.php?title=Dopravn%C3%BD_podnik_Bratislava_Tatra_T3_cars

Looks good! The only things I recommend are changing the color of "Preserved" to green from blue so it won't look like a link and to add " align="left"| " to the notes sections to straighten them up (it looks neater this way).

By the way, your main page link (http://cptdb.ca/wiki/index.php?title=Dopravn%C3%BD_podnik_Bratislava,_a.s.) has this error now:

"A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software. The last attempted database query was:

Good call on changing the preserved text to green. I'll change it.

Not too sure about changing the formatting for the "notes" section... that's a hell of a lot of code to change, and everything else is centered in the page.

I know about the issue with the main page. It's been doing this forever, but when I originally created the page, there were times when it would load fine. I've been meaning to PM a wiki admin about it, I just haven't gotten around to it.

Seems to be fixed. I removed (: from the (:2) in the page titles and it seems to be working again.

Seems to have done the trick. I had no idea the fix was so simple. Thanks! :)

I can do it if you want. If you don't like it you can remove it.

Sure, you can give it a try. If there's anything else you want to help with as well let me know :)
