CyRide Ames Iowa

Per the CyRide signals newsletter CyRide will be ordering 4 more Nova Artics. They also have 6 New Gillig Low Floors on order and have purchased 15 2002 Gillig Phantoms from Minneapolis Metro Transit.

Dang, it doesn't seem like other university towns the size of Ames (Iowa) buy arctics. I wonder what the reason for it is?

I don't know of many such examples, but Clemson SC (Clemson U) and Boulder CO (U of Colorado) have both bought LFS Artics in the recent years. There's also Durham NC (Duke U) but it's a bigger city.

Did not know that, thanks! I believe Boulder is significantly bigger than Ames--but Clemson is not.

Has anyone here taken any videos or sound recordings of any of CyRide's old Orion I's (1982-1988)?

They are all 35 feet long and are powered by Detroit Diesel 6V71 engines and Allison HT747 transmissions. The numbers are:

882-883, model 01.506, built 1982

886-887, model 01.506, built 1983

888-891, model 01.507, built 1984

898, model 01.507, built 1985

900 and 909-910, model 01.507, built 1987

908, model 01.506, built 1983 (ex-demo bus)

912, model 01.507, built 1988

Some photos from earlier this week. The regular routes appeared to be run with the Low Floors, while the ex-Metro Transit Phantoms and Orion V were on the short turn ISU trips and ISU shuttle lines. Two artics were also seen on the 23.

Also of interest, CyRide or ISU has contracted some service out to CIT Signature Transportation, CIT was seen operating some of the trips on the 21. I observed 28, ex-CATS, 30, and this unknown # one that was broken down. I believe 28 is a 97 unit based on the CATS wiki and it sounding like an M11:

Auction #2579545 - 2003 Orion V 40 Foot Transit Bus #948

Auction #2579548 - 2002 Gillig Phantom 40 Foot Transit Bus #7129

The Phantom is one of the former Metro Transit units.

I hope there'll still be some Orion V left once stuff gets back towards normal again. I was originally planning to see some on the BHA tour, but since that is delayed till 2021 at least (for very good and understandable reasons) now I'm wondering if CyRide will be all Low Floors and LFSA by the time things return to a peak school period operation.
