Copeland said introduction of the system has “been a big priority for council”, with the aim of beginning the service in 2015.

The above map is part of the article. Cold Lake tried out a transit system 13 September 2004 - 07 June 2005 but cancelled it over its cost. The map demonstrates the geographic dispersion of Cold Lake, which was created from the merger of two communities (Grand Centre and Cold Lake) and the RCAF base at Medley west of Grand Centre.

I know the Classics are being retired... but could they possibly refer to any of the 7501-7550 batch? Or just the Classics? It did mention several 40 passenger buses... IIRC, the seating on their D40LF's is between 39-43. And the MCI Classics are closer to 50?

Cold Lake was actually one point 3 separate towns. You will hear it called Cold Lake North, Cold Lake South, and the Base. Back when I lived in Bonnyville it used to be Cold Lake, Grande Centre, and Medley.

Will be interesting to see how they design the routes and what levels of service they will provide.

Cold Lake’s fleet of six new (old) busses arrived from Calgary on Feb. 9. The city paid a total of $44,000 for the fleet - $5,000 for each bus and $14,000 in spare parts and transportation costs. The busses come fully equipped, with sleeves for ad spaces, coin boxes and digital displays already installed. The city’s next step is to hold public consultation sessions to determine where the stops will be.

Council gives first reading to free transit bylaw

City councillors gave the first reading to the bylaw that, if passed, will welcome free transit in Cold Lake this summer.

“Our council’s primary goal is to establish a strong ridership,” Mayor Craig Copeland said. “If we launch the transit service for free, that’s a decision we can revisit when we do the budget each year, but for now, we’re focused on getting transit up and running in a way that we hope will attract people to the service.”

The current plan is to have one bus travelling Cold Lake North and a second to serve Cold Lake South with the transfer point in the area of Tri City Mall. The busses are expected to run from 6:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. from Monday to Saturday.

“Our plans have been adapted as our staff has tested proposed bus routes and we have sought help and advice in our effort to stand up an effective transit service that is also as cost-effective as possible,” Chief Administrative Officer, Kevin Nagoya, said.

The bylaw will return to council for further consideration at the next regular council meeting.

In the meantime, bus stops and bus stop signs have already been installed around the city and shelters will be in place by the end of August.

The bus service will launch as soon as the contract is approved by the legal department. The city hopes to have busses running as soon as possible.

Well as you can probably tell there was a trip to Cold Lake today. M. Parsons and myself headed out this morning to see what this Cold Lake Transit thing was all about. (Plus where else in Alberta can you ride Classics in Regular service? - well besides Spruce Meadows...)

Click the link for a couple of more pics.

They only run the two routes with a bus on each route. We did see 5004 running in a yard with a bunch of school buses, and later while we riding the route 2 we saw it go by Not in Service on the base - not sure if it was on a charter or training or something?

My suspicion for fleet numbering is they are sequential based on the VIN. 5009 matched as a 1992 based on spotting features. Ex 5019 would fit in perfectly as 5005.

Most likely they are 5004-5009. We did not spot the 6th bus.

5007 and ex 5019 were at the City garage, 5004 was at a local school bus yard.

In the newspaper article from January 2015, it was mentioned that the 6th bus was shorter than the others. It most likely is an ex-Calgary cutaway.
