If I may ask a question out of pure curiosity, how would calcium build up on the tracks? I know nothing about molecular chemistry so I'd like to know

Well there's so much maintenance that can happen nightly. But I'm definitely wanting to know also

So here’s how it works; over time, rainwater will soak through the concrete, and overtime you get what are called calthemite https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calthemite

Which results in the white staining you often see in subway tunnels and sometimes even stalagmites due to the calcium in the cement. If you want to see this all in person, if you check out Burrard and Granville. Look up in the WB platform and on the walls in the EB direction. The white cracking in the walls and ceiling, is the same effect but in person. As well, look under the Edmonds passenger overpass, there might be a few Calthemites hanging under the overpass. Assuming nothing has been changed or cleaned.

Thanks for the insightful response! I didn't know about that effect.

As per alerts page:

"

Due to mechanical issues, Train 1, 5:25 AM departure from Mission City Station and Train 2, 4:20 PM departure from Waterfront Station will be cancelled from Mon, Jan 20, until Fri, Jan 24.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and we understand the impact this will have to some of our daily customers. We are hoping to return to our regular service schedules by the end of the week. During this period, West Coast Express will be adding capacity by increasing the number of cars on our 8 car train to 10."

"SeaBus sailings will temporarily occur every 15 minutes during peak periods while the Burrard Otter II undergoes maintenance work. This is a temporary change from the current weekday peak schedule of departures occurring every 10 minutes."

Then why didn't translink just not retire the Burrard beaver They could get more seabus service

Due to a Technical issue service on the Expo line Skytrain is temporarily not operating between Edmonds & Waterfront Station. A Bus Bridge is in place between Edmonds & Waterfront Stations.

Update full service has been restored to the Expo Line

This evening is round 2

No conformation yet if the morning trains are cancelled?

Also anti pipeline protesters have blocked off the full intersection of Hastings in Clark. All trolley services on E. Hastings are routing via Commercial, Powell (WB), Cordova (EB) Main SB, regular routing Hastings.

R5 Detour Regular route to Hastings and Salisbury, then Salisbury, Franklin, Commercial, Powell, Hawks, Hastings

I was on 12024 (lucky catch) heading to UBC detouring via Main, 41st and Oak and my phone buzzes. I look at it to see that there is another detour for the 49. Luckily I got of a few stops before UBC but I told myself "Boy, are these 49 drivers gonna have a great day"*Sarcastically of course*. What really pissed me off and made me question the society we live in is when our bus happened to come to a stop at the RapidBus stop when we were at a red light at Cambie street. People started banging on the door and once the driver open the door and tries to explain that this isn't the R4 people still got on the bus. At first I was like they must be going to UBC so this taking the 49 or R4 at this point wouldn't make a difference. The driver turns off of 41st and onto Oak then 49 where almost all of the people that had boarded at Cambie got off the bus to realize this wasn't the R4, many cussed the driver out for not telling them. As I write this I'm seriously wondering what this world has come to. IS IT THAT HARD TO TAKE 2 AND A HALF SECONDS TO READ THE F**KING DESTINATION SIGN!!!! The second I graduate and find myself a good flight school somewhere in the plains I am getting the hell out of this sh*t show.

Keep in mind, wherever you go, if that place happens to have transit, you’re still going to bump into the same things there just like you’re encountering here..

I think it has less to do with transit it self but the pure laziness and stupidity of many people that I have encountered in Vancouver. People here (and I know I sound like a geezer for saying this but) always have their nose stuck in their phone and many people are not socially aware at all. This is really just a Vancouver issue because I have taken the Maui Bus and RTC (Québec City) and everyone there is polite and actually socialise on the bus. When I step into a bus in Vancouver with my friends all you can hear is the engine, the music that the guy across from you is playing too loud into his earbuds and me an my friends talking. You'd be lucky to walk into a bus in Vancouver to see anyone younger than 50 involved in an active conversation.  Point being, there is no sense of community in Vancouver and this is really just a "big city" problem.

Sorry for going off topic.

Haha I know I'm going off-topic as well, but your destination sign story reminded me of a couple weeks ago. I was riding the 254 to downtown, and some people got on at Park Royal (not surprising - people go from park royal to downtown all the time), but then when the bus started going towards the Lions Gate Bridge instead of the British Properties they demanded the driver let them off. It's crazy that people don't read stuff like that - the destination sign clearly said VANCOUVER on it instead of BRITISH PROPERTIES lol
