When I entered that VIN for this 1983 Orion I, as typed (2B1129573D5509770), the VIN Decoder website says the check digit is incorrect.

Therefore, I must now submit to you whether or not which of these two VINs is actually the correct one. Is it either 2B1129273D5509770, or 2B1129579D5509770?

As the 6V53 was not used in the Orion I after 1982 save for the last OC Transpo 30-foot models (8371 to 8392), then I can only guess at whether or not Kingston's 8382 had the 6V53 (according to the typed VIN there) or if it had the 6V71N like many '83 Orions did.

The engine code, which is the 7th digit in the VIN, would mean:

2 = Detroit Diesel 6V71N

5 = Detroit Diesel 6V53N (C40 injectors)

I checked with "D40LF" who has several official rosters and "2B1129273D5509770" is the correct vin.

Which would mean the correct engine in this bus would be the 6V71N, not 6V53N.

The Wiki page to this bus in the original post (link above) shows that error (see description box on said page) and possibly a few other sites... and I was suspicious of that since like I said before, the 6V53 was not used in the Orion I after 1982 other than the last 30-foot buses delivered to Ottawa in early 1983.

This appears to be another incorrect VIN. Why? This, which represents Grey Goose Bus Lines 160 (later Gray Line Tours 4160 and most recently Perimeter Transportation 692), like all Grey Goose's 1983 Orion I's, came with a Detroit Diesel 6V71N engine and Allison MT644 transmission.

The "3" as the engine code would indicate a Detroit Diesel 6V53T engine; and buses like this clearly didn't sound like it.

The correct VIN number for this unit should be: 2B1128271D6702732. This means this is one of a handful of those Canadian-bound buses to have been finished in Oriskany instead of Mississauga.

Thank you,

Ben
