I can tell you right away the 1982's and 1983's are not correct. Orion VIN's to 999 had a "counting number" in positions 12 thru 14 that increased by one with each VIN. For instance, Brandon #34 - 2B1129274C5414536 would have been the 414th bus. However, this number increased in the order buses were ordered, not in serial (positions 15 thru 17) order! So a batch of six on one order might have scattered serials, but would have consecutive counting numbers. In the early days, nobody noticed this, so many were never recorded!

Andre,

It looks like we'll have to make a database around these serial numbers Orion had used from 1982 to 1984.

Their official records say the first unit to get out with the three zeros being replaced by the production line sequencing started with serial number 457 (Markham Transit #2017, delivered 5/1982) and lasted until serial number 999 (Whitehorse Transit #14, delivered 7/1984) so that they could free up the first three numbers to allow serial number 1000 (Montgomery County Ride-On #5266, delivered 8/1984) and beyond to fit.

However, I also noticed that the first American-built Orion I (final assembly in Oriskany, NY), for Pacific Transit System of Raymond, WA (unit #D10, delivered 7/1982) carries a serial number of C6001449 (rather than C6000449).

Midland Transit 66 - C5358459

Montachusett Regional Transit Authority 1501 - C6359460

Montachusett Regional Transit Authority 1502 - C6360461

Montachusett Regional Transit Authority 1503 - C6361462

Timmins Transit 52 - C5393503

Utica Transit Authority 541 - C6394504

Utica Transit Authority 542 - C6395505

Utica Transit Authority 543 - C6396506

However, Toronto Transit Commission's 1982 Orion Is (8730-8739), though delivered that September, do not follow the pattern as they were apparently backlogged (meaning an earlier order) and so still have the three zeros in positions 12-14.

But... getting back to GATRA's Orion Is, the 1983 units would've had these serial #s:

8320 - D6722750

8321 - D6723752

8322 - D6724754
