Long time since something was written here. I hope, it is okay to reuse this thread. 😊

I just noticed that in this vin list of FAX 9901-9910 every check digit is incorrect (exept 9906 but i guess that's a lucky match). Is it possible that there is a mistake somewhere?

Watch out for this. It turns out a lot of VINs, especially Gillig VINs have weird/non-standard check digits. They were like this since the day they were manufactured. I've discovered this in the past few years when inputting Gillig VINs onto the wiki from my production list, from auctions, and from build plate photos. Decoders will mark the check numbers as incorrect, yet on the build plate that weird check digit is really there. Also these buses are registered with these weird check numbers in the DMV system, so some VIN checkers will recognize the weird check digits, but others won't. Usually if you're inputting a calculated VIN with a normal check number and no records show up, it's likely registered under a non-standard check digit. I've discovered this when using sites such as these (https://www.vehiclehistory.com/) & (https://www.autocheck.com/vehiclehistory/?siteID=0).

I just noticed when looking on the 1999 Gillig Low Floor VIN page (https://cptdb.ca/wiki/index.php/Gillig_Low_Floor_'X_VINs') that there is a lot more non-standard VINs than I thought. I always add "non-standard check digit" on the VIN lists when valid vins with weird check digits are found on build plates or pass this VIN checker (which is also subject to occasional error/incorrectness)(https://www.carfax.com/vehicle-history-reports/) but does not pass this calculator/decoder (https://vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov/decoder/CheckDigit).

Here is a perfect example: https://www.govdeals.com/photos/7436/7436_5_22.jpg from here https://www.govdeals.com/index.cfm?fa=Main.Item&itemid=5&acctid=7436. It does not check out on the check digit decoder.
