Some of the 1981-82 models were rebuilt and renumbered into the 7000 series (those units rebuilt directly in New York) and the 7500 series (units as rebuilt in Owosso, MI) as a way for (what was then) NYCTA to cut down on the cost of bus replacement. The program was dropped when they saw no real savings from it over buying new buses. The rebuilt RTS-04's survived through 2004, when the Orion VII hybrids showed up to replace them and the other RTS's.
