Would anyone happen to know all about the VIN system Gillig used for its buses since September 1, 1980?

This includes the Phantom transit bus, the Phantom school bus (or "transit coach"), the older style "transit coach" (school bus, 1980-82 models), the Spirit midibus and the Advantage low-floor bus.

1ST DIGIT: COUNTRY OF ORIGIN
1 = United States of America

4 = same (incomplete vehicle)

2ND-3RD DIGITS: MANUFACTURER
5G = Gillig Corporation
6G = Gillig Corporation (incomplete vehicle)

4TH DIGIT: MODEL SERIES

CLASSIFICATION OF 4TH VIN DIGIT

A = School bus. Sold for school bus usage.

B = Utility bus. School bus style, but not used as school bus.

C = City transit bus. Transit bus without high backed seats, not low-floor - 3 step entry (aluminum, steel or stainless body structure)

D = City suburban bus. Transit bus with high backed seats, not low-floor - 3 step entry

E = Incomplete vehicle. An assemblage consisting as a minimum of frame and chassis structure, powertrain, steering system, suspension system, and braking system.

F = Shuttle bus. Bus used for shuttle service with aluminum body structure, not low-floor - 3 step entry

G = City transit bus/low floor. Transit bus with or without high backed seats - low floor - 1 step entry
