busfan0947
Here's an article on the STM's website about this new HEV LFS bus that they will test from june 10th. To see a picture of the bus, you need to go to the home page of their website and look for the same page in french: http://www.stm.info/.../a-co130603.htm This bus should have 33-999 as a fleet number. However, this is a 2012 bus according to the VIN, and it has a "Z" for the 8th digit. This is totally new and should be related to the fact that this is probably the very first bus with an ISB engine coupled with the BAE transmission. The BAE hybrid transmission comes standard with the ISB I believe. (See this conversation regarding BAE hybrids at the TTC http://www.cptdb.ca/...pic=13695&st=20) PS Thanks to AlexLy for the photo! Well maybe for other manufacturers but not for Novabus. According to their website, the ISB engine was to be coupled with the Allison EP40 transmission until now as a standard basis. This is why the bus will be tested in Montreal with this new arrangement, otherwise it would not be necessary to do so.

The BAE HybriDrive HDS 200 (system used in 40 ft buses) has the ISB as standard, regardless of manufacturer. It's the HDS 300 (for 60 ft artics) that will come with the ISL. This is why all their Hybrid buses did have Allison EP40 with the ISB engine until now. An ISB engine could be fitted with other transmissions than BAE... But we all know that BAE Systems makes HDS200 standard with ISB.
Jack 47
Ottawa is planning to convert their Orion (BAE Hybrid) buses to straight diesel due to the higher cost of operating the hybrid powertrain, mainly due to underperformance. Why is Novabus and the STM trying a BAE hybrid system when Ottawa is bailing out? How did the STM's other Novabus LFS Hybrid (Allison Ep40 Hybrid) do so far? An electronic document available online of a fuel study that suggests that a straight diesel retrofitted with electric radiators and Topodyn-programmed ZF transmissions performs almost as well as an unmodified Ep40-equipped LFS in terms of fuel economy: http://www.stm.info/english/en-bref/a-raptechhybride.pdf However, the reprogrammed conventional diesel bus accelerates far slower than the hybrid. Matt Demers
I rather have a hybrid than a diesel bus with Topodyn, it's disgustingly slow. Well, I know for sure I'm down to ride it!

Bus_Medic
Best of luck.... Told y'all the stove was hot, but you wouldn't listen. Who knows, maybe I'm wrong and the latest incarnation is good. But I have 7 years practical experience telling me it's bad.

This has been very quiet for months and is unknown if they will actually follow through. Theres no "plans" to convert 177 buses over, let alone 1 at this point. MAX BRT
Is this the very first Series Hybrid instead of Parallel for Nova? Yes, that is the consensus. This has been very quiet for months and is unknown if they will actually follow through. Theres no "plans" to convert 177 buses over, let alone 1 at this point. Thanks for the clarification on that. And I think its important to keep in mind that the BAE hybrid is a good buy if you are going to use it on a slow route with frequent stops. OC Transpo doesn't have many routes like that, from what I understand.

Chris_the_traveller
Maybe because both routes have some particularly steep inclines.
