General Route Discussion and History

Recommended Posts

Let's try to keep this thread for general discussion of current and past bus routes for Calgary Transit. Thanks!

Thanks to member 'D40LF', for pointing this out, but bus stop #8111 on south bound 36th St. at Dover Ridge S.E. still has the route 90 on the sign. I forget when this route was discontinued but I seem to recall it was deleted within the past 5 years. Attached is a photo of the bus stop sign which didn't turn out as well as I thought it had.

Old Route 15 serving Bridlewood (before Route 14 existed): http://wayback.archive.org/web/20070404012521/http://www.calgarytransit.com/Routes/html/rte015.html

Route 82 Southwood: http://wayback.archive.org/web/20070203023443/http://www.calgarytransit.com/Routes/html/rte082.html

And a photo of the old Route 82 sign remaining at Heritage station:

I also have a whole system map from 1998. I could go on and on talking about what the system looked like back then.

When heading back up 36th Street, after dropping you off, noticed that the other side of the sign had 90 on it too.

Guess you should have jumped out and got a shot like I suggested, I wouldn't have closed the doors and driven off :

Eh! That looks alot like the current 23.

There are several places where old routes still appear on the signs. Down in Douglasdale the old 400 series route to MacKenzie is still shown on one sign, forget the number, and also in Whitehorn the 21 and 55 still appear on signs from when they used to run to Whitehorn station.

Weird that Route 90 went up 52nd Street/Falconridge Blvd just like the current 23, and made a loop around Saddletowne Circle long before Saddletowne station opened. It almost seemed pointless.

Not really. The 90 served several communities including Martindale where I used to live. So really it didn't seemed Pointless as it was used by several people that didn't want to wait to get to Whitehorn Station by using 71 , 428 or 436.

Didn't serve a lot though, since it covered a very small portion of those neighborhoods. That's why said it almost did (but not quite)

Looking through the link that Tallis posted it shows the 23 still running along the same route as today, except for the part in Saddletowne.

Wonder did the 90 interline with something or was there a loop at the southern end?

The 90 only did a few trips each rush hour. Southbound in AM and northbound in PM like the route 176.

At most, It would've been interlined with various school runs.

Here is the 201 back in 2002, when it ran from Fish Creek-Lacombe to Brentwood: http://wayback.archive.org/web/20020805141609/http://www.calgarytransit.com/Routes/html/rte201.html Lots of interesting connection buses at Fish Creek-Lacombe.

And here's the 202: http://wayback.archive.org/web/20021016040937/http://www.calgarytransit.com/Routes/html/rte202.html

Don't know if they are still there but last year there were some old bus signs at Anderson Garage with a 200 series route on it

Think it was either the 214 or 215. Will have to find the photo.

I was wondering if that was the case.

I don't remember if I saw it here but I do remember seeing a map somewhere of the Marlborough area before the 202 line was built. Marlborough used to be quite a busy hub with routes that traveled downtown (110 or something like that) along Memorial and various feeder routes from all over the NE at that time.

Marlborough is my closest LRT station and it's cool knowing things were like that back then. It's still pretty busy even today; quite a few busy routes stop there compared to some other stations.

I would LOVE to see a system map, or even route maps, from 1988 during the Olympics. Does anyone have them perhaps? :D

From before Brentwood opened? Yes, that would be interesting to see. I always find myself wondering where all the NW buses terminated (University station does not have a bus terminal that is directly accessible to the station), or if they even DID terminate at any of the NW train stations.

Prior to Brentwood opening, the majority of the current northwest communities currently serviced by Crowfoot and Dalhousie did not exist. So there really wouldn't been have many feeder routes at all. For example, in the early 80's Edgemont and Hawkwood were the furthest out communities in the northwest, and a fraction of their current sizes and they had very minimal transit service.

I found a pic of those 200'd Routes that where on a sign at anderson garage. They where 214 Somerset and 215 Bridlewood Busstop #9213

Interesting considering that Stop #9213 is now a Route 11 stop (NB James McKevitt Road @ Shannon Avenue SW)

Thanks that was the one. There was another sign with it that was something to do with the Chinook Centre if my memory is accurate.

If you are looking for old Calgary Transit maps, the perfect place to find them is at the SFU Geography Library. There are maps of Calgary Transit which go back to 1976. Its interesting to compare the old Blue Arrow routes and imagine how they may have worked. There was one Blue Arrow Route (think 110 or 112) which connected 52 Street and Whitehorn Drive through Marlborough then Memorial Drive and out to Richmond Road bus terminal.

As with the old former routes, its also interesting to compare the routes which haven't changed much. The route 2 Glammorgan/Mount Pleasant (only addition north of Thorncliffe Road to/from 78 Avenue via Hunterview Drive), 3 Elbow Drive (south of Anderson Road to Fish Creek Park), 7 South Calgary (completely unchanged), 10 Home Road/Southcentre (Similar routing, except terminated where route 22 goes in Dalhousie neighbourhood and at Market Mall for north terminus, and south terminus was where the route 83 goes now, through the Parkland community.. continued south on Bonaventure to Canyon Meadows and then Parkland Drive(?)), 13 Mount Royal (minor City Centre changes and service to/from Westhills via MRU, 46 Beddington (minor routing changes but very similar to 1978 routing), 66 Blackfoot Express (extension north on 52 Street to Saddletown as developed areas expanded).

Prior to opening the West LRT, there were more routes with minimal changes through the above mentioned routes have had very little aside from terminal ends dating back to the late 1970's.

The 83 also served Lake Bonvavista Drive west from southbound Bonaventure Drive to Acadia Drive. The south on Acadia to Canyon Meadows to Parkland.

3 Elbow Drive (south of Anderson Road to Fish Creek Park).

Really! Where did the route 3 turn around if it didn't go south of Anderson Road ?

The 56 Deer Run served Bonaventure Drive from Anderson road to Canyon Meadows. Not the 83.

Not sure the exact date but I remember seeing a map of the route 3 only going as far as Southhampton Drive, it would have been very, very long ago when the route 3 was still served by trolley buses. The route 3 also didn't serve Heritage Station during the trolley bus era.
