Philippine Airlines will launch service to Toronto starting Nov. 30, three times a week. Eastbound sector will operate nonstop, but Westbound sector involves a stop at YVR presumably because of prevailing winds, requiring more fuel.

On the other hand, they are dropping service to Las Vegas.

And with that...

Philippine Airlines from 18SEP13 is cancelling operations to Toronto, just nearly 10 months after launching this route. The airline currently operates Boeing 777-300ER aircraft on Manila – Vancouver – Toronto 3 times a week. The airline earlier this year planned to increase operation to Toronto from 3 weekly to daily from 17JAN13.

Reservation for Toronto service on/after 18SEP13 is now closed. As of 18JUL13, PR118/119 Vancouver service is also closed for reservation, while the remainder 4 weekly remains available to book. Existing Toronto schedule as follow.

PR118 MNL1515 – 1215YVR1345 – 2105YYZ 77W 357

PR119 YYZ2235 – 0025+1YVR0140+1 – 0610+2MNL 77W 357

I never thought PR extending to YYZ is a smart move. Either MNL-YVR-YYZ or MNL-YYZ-YVR cannot please both YVR and YYZ paxs. It just add cost without much extra revenue. PR is better off to terminate at YVR and code share YVR-YYZ with WS or AC.

PR is better off keeping YVR-LAS where one crew can do YVR-LAS-YVR (vs 2 crews for YVR-YYZ-YVR extension) and the flights are always full with YVR originating tour groups and casino VIPs (casino pay for the airfare).

MNL-YVR is now subject to competition from Mainland Chinese airlines such as China Eastern offering lower fare YVR-PVG-MNL than PR non-stop YVR-MNL.
