TheAverageJoe
Hey guys just planning a trip, just wanted to ask your help on where is the best places to fan (Loops, stations, terminals etc) for the LA area systems? Also since we will be using transit when we are there also what are the terminals to stay away from for safety concerns? Also if any of the LA fans wanna meet up with us let us know. We will also be doing siteseeing and stuff besides fanning.

Though the Lapd can be (insert bad word here) towards photographers Big Blue Bus ( Santa Monica ) is pretty good towards Transit fans Photography Guidelines Only permissible in public areas, proof of fare required in marked fare required areas (station platforms of all rail stations and the Metro Orange Line) No commercial photography without prior authorization and consent from Metro Hand held equipment only, no tripods are permitted No photography inside moving trains for privacy and safety reasons No flash photography, especially into oncoming transit vehicles (rail or bus) Photography must not interfere with passenger safety or movement at any time
Seashore_518203
Though the Lapd can be (insert bad word here) towards photographers Big Blue Bus ( Santa Monica ) is pretty good towards Transit fans Actually I was in LA in April and spent a week and a half taking photos in the greater LA area. The only problem I had was with a OCTA driver who did not like his photo taken at the Fullerton Metrolink station. Even at Union Station in LA, there was always plenty of police and security guards around and none ever approached me. Good places to shoot include: Aviation station on the Green Line - operators at the station include LAX shuttle buses, LACMTA, Gardena, Culver City, Santa Monica, Culver City, Beach Cities and MAX. Union Station - LACMTA, Foothill, Antelope Valley, Flyaway Shuttle, USC shuttle buses and many others. Some operators are only at specific sides of the station though. Downtown Long Beach (end of the blue line) - Long Beach, Torrance, LADOT Commuter Express. Norwalk station on the Green Line - Norwalk, Long Beach, LACMTA. Pomona Metrolink station - Foothill (including Silver Streak and the Proterra electric buses), Omnitrans The El Monte busway station is under construction and is a pretty tough place to shoot at now. The Expo line just opened when I was out there and I did not get a chance to ride it but I imagine there would be some good stations on that line as well. Thanks for the ideas as Im going to the LA county fair so I will have to take Metrolink to Pomona station and was thinking of taking Foothill one way either there or back. Shakey077
Adding to the above places you can also try Cerritos Mall , 183rd St. Long Beach Transit, LACMTA, Norwalk Transit, OCTA, and Cerritos on Wheels. Del Amo Blue Line Station - Long Beach Transit, LACMTA, & Carson Circut. South Bay Galleria - Torrance Transit, LACMTA, Beach Cities Transit, & Gardena Transit. If I can think any more I post them up too.

Thanks, PM if you wanna hang out with us when we are down. I recommend Foothill to Pomona and Metrolink on the way back (Not sure how Metrolink operates during rush hour, ill have to check) Yeah sure, I'll join you guys on some of those days. bzcat
Westwood Village has good selection for spotters: Metro Rapid, Metro Local, Big Blue Bus Local, Culver City Local, Culver City Rapid, LADOT Commuter Express, UCLA Bruin Bus. Downtown Santa Monica has lots of good places to take photos of Big Blue Bus. Downtown Long Beach transit plaza has good selection of Metro and Long Beach Transit buses. Downtown LA wins for variety and frequency. Union station is good but if you want good street shots, try 7th Street or Broadway. You can catch all the major agencies in Downtown LA: Metro, Big Blue Bus, Foothill Transit, Montebello, OCTA, LADOT DASH, LADOT Commuter Express. Plus a few smaller ones like Gardena, Torrance, and AVTA.

C40LFRZeke
7th Street Metro Center - With the new Expo Line now open, the light rail operations at this station is awesome to watch. El Monte Bus Station and El Monte Busway in-general - It's very satisfying to see Metrolink trains running in the median of I-10 at 90 mph, and I could sit at El Monte Bus station all day watching Silver Lines and Streaks whisk people away. I second Aviation and LAX City Bus Center. You will see SM L40LFs, and if you're lucky see some of Culver City's new Xcelsiors. The best place to see Xcelsiors is the Culver City Expo Line Station. On the Line 1 which goes just behind the station, Culver City runs it 100% XN40 AND it runs every 15 minutes all day.
Nicholas Reed
It's very satisfying to see Metrolink trains running in the median of I-10 at 90 mph. The speed along that stretch is more like 79. ;-) Only stretch of 90mph track is south of Fullerton on the old ATSF to San Diego IIRC.

I disagree, when the train is in the middle of I-10 on a Saturday morning, it still easily passes cars, even the speeders. Considering the average car does 70-75, the speeders must be going at least 80-85. Also, there are plenty of sections on the San Bernardino line where there is nothing but warehouses and industry with full straight-aways. Trying riding the San Bernardino Express between Upland and Rancho and tell me that's not 90 mph.

bzcat
Nope... all the decent apps for LA area are iOS or Andriod only. I just use Google Maps with my Blackberry. All the major agencies are on Google. You can also access Metro's mobile website at: m.metro.net The Nextrip bus arrival info is very accurate.
