Charm City Circulator (Baltimore, Maryland)

Recommended Posts

The Charm City Circulator or CCC is the newest system in the state of Maryland, since the Baltimore Department of Transportation established it in 2008. The first service did not begin until January 11, 2010, with the Orange Route going east-west from University of Maryland at Baltimore BioPark (west) to Hollins Market (east). The Purple Route began service on June 4, 2010, going north-south from Baltimore Penn Station (north) to Federal Hill (south). The Green Route began service on November 1, 2011, going east-west from Johns Hopkins Medical Center (east) to City Hall (west). On June 4, 2012, The Banner Route began service just in time for the 2012 Bicentennial Star Spangled Sailabration in celebration of the "War of 1812" and the writing of United States's national anthem. Service operate east-west from Inner Harbor (west) to Fort McHenry (east). In the Fall of 2011, the water taxi service, known as, the Water Taxi Harbor Connector began operation with two water routes on Patapsco River or "open bay" portion of the Inner Harbor and with one planned. The city of Baltimore's ridership downtown boomed with the system's "FREE" fare service and nearly 200,000 ridership in two years. The system has and will forever make a mark in downtown's transportation network and since it's success, more bus lines are planned that can reach outside of downtown Baltimore to connecting major tourist or transit points. The Zoo Route connecting downtown and Inner Harbor to the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore in Druid Hill Park is a future plan for maybe Spring 2013, as well service corridors around Fells Point and Canton and the Westport/Greyhound Bus Terminal, which as well is possible for planning in 2013.

The Charm City Circulator bus fleet contains 18 buses (31 buses) from three manufacturers: Designline Corporation (to be retired), Orion Industries, and Van Hool.

This thread (http://www.cptdb.ca/...or&fromsearch=1) says that the Charm City Circulator has 21 Orion VII hybrids as of December 2011.

The CCC web site says that they still run 21 DesignLine hybrids but I'm guessing that is out-of-date. http://www.charmcity...m/content/about

Our wiki does not clear up the confusion. It shows 13 Orion hybrids.

I'm guessing the wiki needs to be brought up-to-date. A constant job.

Charm City Circulator will be receiving six Novabuses later this year (most likely 40' Diesel). The new operator of the service (RMA) has had issues with bus shortages, and these new buses are intended to provide additional capacity. As a temporary measure, the service started using a few secondhand Gillig Advantages and New Flyer LFs last year.

The Dozen or so Orion VII EPA10 BRT hybrids were not enough?

I wish I had noted this earlier, but there were 3 of the A300L buses for sale on ABC Companies website back in March of this year. These were units #1102-1104.

Were those Hools they picked up by clemson university/tiger transit in South carolina? They recently posted a photo with some mystery van hools in it...

As for 1101 and 1105 I heard both are retired. One is parked in some lot being stripped, the other is a mystery

Not sure. I checked the VIN of 1102 on Vehicle History and it doesn't have any records past 2016.

Also, I found #1106 that was listed on ABC Companies website. This is a 2012 model and isn't listed on the wiki.

Wow, why did they retire these buses so soon?

I believe they retired them due to the contractor change and the uncertainty surrounding it. I could be wrong though.

Already looking to retire the 3Gs?!? WTH

Not really,  I'm not from Baltimore so I can't say for certainty, but from the passage I read , it seems like they're going to have them for a little while.

Quote from the Baltimore business journal:  The current plan is to roll out the new fleet in a staggered replacement, said Colby McFarland, transit services administrator for the Circulator. Six buses were ordered in April, costing $2.6 million. Six more will be purchased next year. Once those buses are ordered, the process of phasing out the older models, three buses, at a time will take another four years, totaling six years for the process.

so what I took away is , those 3G Orion VII's will probably  be replaced either by 2023 or at the latest 2024-25

Is ccc using their stripped their van hools? I saw an all white VH no painted titles whatsoever except for a small paper sign on the inside indicating it’s a CCC bus. Had a multicolor sign, large rear window and a paper NJ plate. Also there wasn’t any number on the bus

Sounds like CCC has fallen into a sad state, and I can't imagine that deadheading to and from Rockville is doing the equipment any good unless the contractor has a facility in or closer to Baltimore. I would assume that these new Novas are a tack on to the big MTA order?
