Can they not make use of the 1700 shells and convert them to full electric?

No.

The iteration of HybriDrive used in the 1700 series, afaik, does not support a conversion to all-electric operation. But considering the transmission is a series hybrid, the current generation technology could technically support such a conversion, and indeed that is stated on the HybriDrive website: http://www.hybridrive.com/transit_overview.php

1605 has been rebuilt but has retained the old style lower floor heaters.

Saw the same thing on 1653...guess they narrowed the scope of work. Kept the original exit doors too.

Still has the grey transfloor extended up to the ramp’s edge though.

I would love to see that happen. The OG hybrids are pure junk and a waste of resources of all kinds. In other words, definitely something Scarborough transit riders don't deserve to ride every day. We ought to see Malvern (and McNicoll when it opens) get the first batches of LFS HEVs and perhaps be the pilot garage for the TTC's E-bus program.

Actually, compared to 1200 and up, the opposite has been true in practice.

It’s been a long, expensive learning curve getting there, but after all the upgrades, modifications and money we invested replacing the engines with Cummins crate drop ins in the last 3 or so years, I can honestly say they’re in better shape than the NGs.

of course that’s relatively speaking, they still pale in comparison to the non hybrid fleet.

I’m  going to stick my neck out and say that either birchmount or eglinton will get the e buses. Downtown routes, harsher outdoor storage conditions to put them and their charging gear through their paces. After all, isn’t the whole point to see how robust they are?

-plus overhead structures to mount all the charging infrastructure to are already in place at the two sites.

As much trouble as the OG hybrids are their are definitely tradeoffs. One example is the with the reduced capacity that the 40ft Novas have compared with the hybrids. Replace the hybrids with the LFS with the current TTC loading standards and you'll see buses more packed than ever in Scarborough. On the flip side of things, it may be good to actually get a reliable bus out in service that has a much reduced chance of breaking down.
