'Fifth Avenue Coach # 2095 Goes Navy'

Recommended Posts

During World War II, bus companies across the nation did their share in moving military and civilian personnel to and from their appointed defense related toils and, beyond that, lent their equipment to advertising campaigns to raise money and encourage enlistment to bolster the war effort.

In New York, Green Bus Lines and North Shore Bus Company among others repainted at least one of their buses in stars and stripes to hawk the purchase of U. S. War Bonds with others, such as Fifth Avenue Coach Company's # 2095 seen below, doing its best as a rolling billboard to recruit Navy fliers with its eye catching red, white and blue theme.

Of interest on # 2095, which was a 1936 Yellow Coach Model 735, are the darkened headlamps that were thought to be less attractive in night raids by enemy bombers.

Photo taken on Manhattan's Riverside Drive in October of 1942 by Culver Pictures, Inc. and is up for bid on eBay by jp-themint as item # 330723456612.
