Just arrived in New Haven this week, will be staying for a year. Coming from Calgary, neat to note the similarities overall with the fleet there (Nova artics being the exception - we only have artic New Flyers). Really pleased to see the cloth-covered cushioned seats on the D40LFs, and the unexpected bonus of air conditioning while maintaining openable windows. Are there any particularly noteworthy units I should keep an eye out for in terms of nearing their retirement date and with distinctive features?

Attached: quick phone crop of 1046 on my first morning here.

The 2001s are next for retirement. Those are: 108 (Comes out once a week or so to replace the Union Station Shuttle XDE35), 109, 110,111, & 112. Those, and the 300-series D40LFs.

There's the also brand new bus, 1750, if you're interested in that. Although, I can't imagine it looking too good now after spending the last couple days in service (New Haven's buses get quite a beating from the passengers).

Saw 1752 this morning - does CT bring them online sequentially according to their number? Nice to see the new fleet rolling out briskly.

The process can vary. I saw 1708 in Hartford before 1707. But now 1754 & 1768 are in line to receive it's tech before 1753,1755,etc.

The arrival of the 1800 series definitely signifies the end of the Detroit Diesel era in Connecticut. These will replace the last buses with  Series 50 engines (about 60 or so left). Detroit has been in CT buses since the 1960-70s. By the time the arrival of 2018 model transit vehicles arrive, the last Detroit Diesel vehicles will likely be Peter Pans older J4500s, and privately owned buses.

As am I...it could be possible that it occurred because it's the holiday season, and 1204 gets crowded regularly. But even if that was the case, 108 is supposed to be there, unless the driver asked for a 1700 instead.

It's not CT Transit, but pretty close? This weekend marked the inauguration of the new Hartford Line rail service between New Haven and Springfield via Hartford, and service was free on these two days. Very popular, it reached capacity by mid-day, and they apparently had to turn away "new" customers, reserving service only to bring people home - I have no idea how they enforced that. The return train from Hartford that I was supposed to be on got cancelled for unknown reasons, so they suggested either try cramming into the next Amtrak, or wait for the next CT Rail consist in 1.5 hours, or take one of the CT Transit buses that were doing a highway run back down to New Haven - chose the latter, thankfully with an air-conditioned XD40.

You went too, eh? Nice! I rode it on Saturday. I thought about going today just for those shuttle buses (maybe they would bring in some recently decommissioned MCI or the reserve 400s ^-^).

I thought Saturday was bad. The Amtrak shuttles had to turn people away at some stations, and the A/C on some of the ex-MBTA cars went out on Saturday. Until I heard what happened today, that is. As expected, some people were confused on why the bathrooms were locked.

I see that the new numbering scheme is now 8###. Anyone know why that has changed?

A friend of mine who works for Connecticut Transit in Hartford says that it was annoying to call for contractor-operated buses (I guess A14 or A8 can sound like various things over telephone or radio) , and so contractor buses (from this order onward) will be numbered in the 8000 range.

CT goes back to the future with transit-oriented development

By Tom Condon, CTMirror.org

Updated 11:45 am EDT, Monday, July 29, 2019

New Britain — The decades after World War II were unkind to many Connecticut cities, New Britain among them. The Hardware City lost jobs, was carved up by highways and saw residents depart for the suburbs. Its once bustling downtown began to look desolate, almost like an archeological site.

Not anymore.

Downtown New Britain is steadily coming back. Streets have been revamped and redesigned (with roundabouts and bike lanes), a downtown park has been spiffed up, and historic buildings are being refurbished for housing and other uses. A new development, two five-story buildings with about 160 residential units and 20,000 square feet of retail space, is under construction.

“More downtown buildings have been sold in the last two years than in the last 20 years,” said longtime city development director Bill Carroll, a New Britain native. “It’s a beautiful thing to see

What’s driving this revival? The bus.

I may be doing a day trip out to Connecticut from Boston in mid January. Currently, my plan is BoltBus from Boston to New Haven, fan in New Haven, CTRail to Hartford, CTFastrack at minimum, then inevitably the Amtrak shuttle to Springfield for a little PVTA action (their loop between Union Station and MGM can use some love) before getting Greyhound back to Boston since neither Greyhound or Peter Pan has an early evening Boston departure. I haven't ridden CTTransit since the days when the D40LF's were relatively new and Classics still roamed, so I have some questions.

Will a day pass bought in New Haven work in Hartford?

Which New Haven routes are my best bet for an LFSA? Which Hartford routes?

Which routes in New Haven and Hartford divisions have good fanning value?

I know some of the routes utilizing the CTFastrack busway use baby Gilligs. Would these be running on a weekend?

Thanks in advance!

Honestly for NH if you stand in downtown (i forget the intersection) you’ll get almost everything so I’d just suggest going there and waiting for some bus you like to come. Last time i fanned nh (last spring), I stood there and saw at least one of everything within an hour. There’s not much really in the way of variety

Yes. They work on all divisions. Some services (like express buses) require a little extra change if you try to use a day pass on those routes.

For New Haven, Routes 212, 228, 229, 238, 271, and 272 utilize the diesel and hybrid artics heavily. During AM rush hour, they may appear on the 201 and 215.

On weekdays for Hartford, Routes 42, 47, 50, 52, 54/X, 60, 62, 64, 66, occasionally the 83 use the local hybrid artics. Route 101 is almost exclusively hybrid artic.

Depends on what you are looking for in terms of fanning value. I.e. for high speed areas, I recommend the 32, crosstown routes (91 & 92), and the 121 (goes on a highway for about 10 minutes).

The Gilligs only run on CTfastrak feeder loops (140/F, 144, 153, 161), and all feeder routes operate seven days a week.
