Almost 2 years since the original ones (9637-9649) were either shipped to New Haven or Stamford or retired. This one however isn't our original ones. Its Stamfords own and looks like NBT pulling buses out of retirement again.

thehartfordboy
Nice to get a shout out about CT transit. Are people up there excited about the busway that is being built? Thanks. Its my state and what I take and love to ride. Weird. I don't think the state is doing a good job with promoting this. If I was in charge, I would've bought billboard space, have people run around with lil ads & fridge magnets, use bus ad space even if it is a little ad along the roof of the low floor buses to promote the fastrak. But then again, sadly many people see it as "waste of money." It isn't if they ride the buses. If anything, New Britain MIGHT end up with better service (if the contractors get their act together). You would not know the time frame like spring to fall 2014? I saw one in Stamford in April 2013 when I was down in NYC for MBS. Unfortunately, no. Hopefully they will be around in the spring time. Imma say about late spring time to fall time.
MAX BRT
CTfastrak busway starts service early next year! Federal and state taxpayers are putting up nearly $33 million for 48 new buses. And get this variety: 12 Nova LFX artics will shuttle between New Britain and Hartford along the 9.4-mile busway. The Novas cost a little more than $900,000 each. "These buses feature multiple boarding doors, low floors, both rear and forward-facing wheelchair positions and on-board bike provisions," 18 New Flyer 40 footers (hybrids) for $618,809 apiece will operate on connector routes. 12 30-foot buses from Gillig of Hayward, Calif., for $625,039 (presumably hybrids--given the price) will provide neighborhood circulator service CTfastrak also is acquiring six 45-footers from MCI of North Dakota for $561,508 each (not sure where they will be used) Sources: http://www.courant.com/news/connecticut/hc-busway-buses-0825-20140822,0,3022649.story http://newbritainherald.com/articles/2014/08/18/news/doc53f2b3d41559f935703167.txt

MAX BRT
Definitely a good variety. Funny how the New Flyer 40-foot buses are cheaper than the Gillig 30 foot buses. Yes, very surprising! Perhaps there are some things CT Transit wanted that were unusual and added to the cost, especially given the small order of only 12 buses. MiExpress
MUNI's 30 foot Orion VII hybrids were about $30,000 more than their 40 foot counterparts despite being built in the same year. Reason: 40 foots were through a competitive tender that involved several manufacturers, 30 foots were sole source purchase
MAX BRT
Ah, thanks ST! Makes good sense. Gillig enjoys less competition in the 30 foot size. If I recall correctly, New Flyer does not currently offer the Xcelsior heavy-duty as a 30 footer (they do offer the MiDi in that size but not yet as a hybrid). ElDorado does or did offer the EZ Rider II as a heavy-duty 30 footer though. Am I right? Perhaps the EZ Rider is not available as a hybrid. MAX BRT
Candidates for Governor spar over transit funding. I hope voters in CT are paying attention. http://insurancenewsnet.com/oarticle/2014/09/16/foley-slams-malloy-progressive-agenda-on-mass-transit-a-556188.html#.VBo4OktjBgM "This is unbelievable. He (Foley) says traffic has been worse than it has ever been and then he says we spend too much money on transit. The reason we need to spend more money on transit is because traffic is bad. Traffic is bad because we under-invested in this system for the better part of 20 years before I became governor," Malloy said.
RailBus63
Then there's this: Foley said he did not think CT Fastrack, the busway between New Britain and Hartford that has generated continuing criticism from Republicans in the legislature, would help traffic congestion. He said he wouldn't shut it down, since the funds have already been spent. Foley, however, said it would be a "challenge" if it didn't pay for itself. "I don't know if we should be subsidizing the operation of that if it doesn't have sufficient ridership," he said. Malloy said all transportation is subsidized, from buses to trains to roads and airlines, since states build airports. Foley was talking about shutting down the new busway previously - I guess someone told him that the federal government would expect hundreds of million back from Connecticut if he did that. MVTArider
On a side note, transit fallacy class 101: In general for the North American car centered land use urban environment market: transit, a new transitway, bus lanes, LRT, subway, etc. does NOT cure congestion. It offers an alternative to the congestion. So yes, the anti-transit crowd is actually correct in saying this new (insert project/bus line/rail line here) will not help congestion. The problem is they need to realize that we need reliable alternatives to driving in the congestion, besides simply sitting on the freeway in our mobile traffic jam waiting room trying to figure out how the hell you program that confounded touch screen in the console. Probably. And likely the busway is becoming more popular as the word about it gets around. Admittedly, I live in Michigan and know little about trying to get around the Hartford metro area. That said, I think the busway being built in CT is the most exciting transpo infrastructure project in the US right now. Its going to make life better in the region and I expect it will pay for itself with increased economic development. For everyone who hates the project, I hope you know this is the cheapest way to go. And 2 republican governors supported this project and the funding for the research.
