Prevost Astral XL

Can anyone shed more light on what a Prevost Astral XL is?

Looks like a LeMirage XL, but with a panoramic roof. But was it actually a different model, or sort of a "version" of the LeMirage?

http://www.inter-bus.ca/photosastrralxl.htm

http://busforsaleguide.com/prevost-bus-for-sale.htm

says "Astral is a LeMirage model which has sightseer windows built into the roof."

Thanks!

I know I'm reviving an old thread here, but it looks like that's exactly what it is:

https://amp.purplewave.com/auction/190508/item/DN9039.html

It seems to be a variant of the LeMirage XL although the badging suggests it may have been marketed as a different model based on the same platform. Either way, they seem to be rare.

Looking at that bus, I'm wondering how structurally sound is it?

I'm not sure who order them in the first place, but something tells me it was either a tour company or sightseeing company, and since only 12 where built I'm leaning towards the latter.

The same tubular steel members in the regular XL coach are present here. The glass panes are placed in areas where insulation voids would have been.

Which leads to the inference that unless the windows were double glazed-making them considerably more top heavy, temperature control would have been difficult. And I’m certain they leaked like sieves.

The bus in the auction link I posted was owned by Coffeyville Community College (retired and replaced with a newer MCI in 2017). Can anyone identify the livery as that of a previous operator? Seems weird that a college would order one. Couldn't find the VIN in wiki.

Quite surprising how the example auctioned off survived until at least last year (I am wondering where it is now). Doesn't seem to have been leaking there from what I can see, although it did say that the "floor [was] soft over wheels" so it may have leaked elsewhere.

I asked @canuck600 and his records showed Viking Trailways Inc. (MO) though the one in the auction link is numbered 8502. So I wonder if they had at least 2 of the 12 units?

I knew it was Trailways. I thought so but I couldn't find a match on Google when I searched for Trailways buses. They either did or 8501 was something else

Here is what seems to be the only shot online of the glass roof from outside. Can anyone identify the operator of this one from the livery?

I also noticed that the ex-CCC/Viking bus in the auction has the same interior as Bell-Horizon 684 (minus TVs):

Thought we might as well compile a list of VINs. Here's what I could find on the Wiki:

2P9A33402F1001001 - 1985, Viking Trailways (Joplin, MO)

2P9A33404F1001002 - 1985, Alaskan Star Charter

2P9A33408F1001004 - 1985, Alaskan Star Charter

2P9A33401F1001992 - 1985, Gray Line of Vancouver

2P9A33403F1001993 - 1985, Americoach

2P9A33405F1001994 - 1985, Gray Line of Vancouver

2P9A33407J1001522 - 1988, PWT

2P9A33401J1001525 - 1988, PWT

2P9A33401J1001542 - 1988, PWT

Some VINs were listed as Astral XLs on this wiki page but the 4th character "L" indicates Le Mirage. Also, there are some units including 1986 models operated by Bell-Horizon, a 1985 operated by CBL of BC and one or two more without VINs listed on the wiki. Even though William Luke claimed that only 12 were built, it appears there may have been more (perhaps Prevost had only built 12 units at the time of his writing). All I know is that 1985 and 1988 seem to be the model years for which most were built and this model is still very rare.
