Caribou & Smallwood.......RIP

Recommended Posts

After arriving at the Alang October 6, the Caribou was beached Oct. 12 on plot 58 and the Smallwood, Oct 13 on plot 60. Now they await their fate with the ship breakers.

Well that's rather unfortunate. I find it somewhat irresponsible for the government to have let this happen at Alang compared to some other environmentally certified scrapping place. Anyway... that's probably a moot point now unless the media decides to make a stir of it.

Working conditions aside, I know...there are far more toxic vessels broken up there on a regular basis.

It may even be the case that they're the only "facility" equipped to dispose of a ship their size.

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust and all the rest of it. It's sad, I too was a passenger with my family on the caribou in 1992.

Ehh... from the looks of it, those owners probably acted as the middlemans of the scrapping businesses during the deal... Both seemed to have been registered in places that wouldn't really warrant a ferry of such size.
