Halifax (metro) Transit.

I noticed today that they've finally updated the destination sign programming on the D40LFs, so the rear displays out of service.

Also construction started this week (or was it last week, they all run together..) at the Dartmouth ferry terminal. A temporary waiting area was created while the waiting room, collectors booth and Tim Hortons area are being renovated. I believe I heard they were looking at May or June for completion.

Thought I'd share.

Photo Curtesy of Wilson Hum, as posted on the Haligonia Facebook page.

Yeah, 975 has been in for a while now, but I suppose that they need to take their time when doing a full rebuild like that (I wonder if it'll get a Luminator like some of the others got...).

Also, I stand corrected on my previous post - 960 did not get repainted, as I saw it today at Cobequid Terminal still rocking the stripes.

Someone needs to tell whoever codes the 87's side destination sign that it's still not quite right - it's fine Sackville-bound, but Dartmouth-bound it jumps back and forth between "87 Glendale" and "To Bridge Term'l" really freakin' fast.

Lastly, bonus points to anyone who noticed either or both of:

-"Cherrybrook" is now two words again (Cherry Brook) on the 68's signs

-If a New Flyer product runs on the 1, its side sign reads "1 Spring Garden" / "To Mumford Terminal", while the front still reads just "To Mumford". (There's no change to the Novas signs as of yet...)

Metro Transit has issued its third-quarter report - this must be a new thing they're doing, and I like it:

http://www.halifax.c...resentation.pdf

Ridership and cost recovery are up across the board - great to hear!

Also, the recent changes to the 10's schedule aren't just for schedule adherence and late night - they've made a large increase in the number of trips during the afternoon peak. Essentially:

  • every 15 minutes between 2pm and 3pm
  • every 8 minutes between 3 and 5pm
  • every 10 minutes between 5 and 6pm.

Before, service was every 30 minutes until 3pm, every 15 minutes until 3:40, every 5-8 minutes until 5pm, and every 20 minutes until 6pm. The catch is that several trips now short-turn at Mic Mac Mall, but that makes sense, considering a lot of the demand seems to drop off after Mic Mac.

Update on the Alderney ferry terminal construction. They're extending the first floor (terminal floor) of the building outwards, on the back side (facing the railroad tracks) so that it comes out flush with the levels above it. This will probably yield an extra 8-10 feet of space. Hopefully they'll be renovating Tim Hortons space as well. Can't wait to see what it's all going to look like!

How long has it been under construction, out of curiosity?

Construction started early March as I recall. I'm over there every day for coffee (I work nearby) but for some reason I can't quite remember exactly when they started...

Also looks like ferry service on Sundays will be suspended for the next four weeks, due to the terminal construction. A shuttle will replace the ferry running on the same schedule, and will not service any stops along the route.

I'm surprised no one else posted this yet, but Metro Transit's 2014/15 Annual Service Plan is out:

http://halifax.ca/council/agendasc/documents/140326cowi1.pdf

Not too many changes, in anticipation of the upcoming system-wide review. Route 165 bites the dust, to be replaced by some new urban express routes 78 and 79. New expanded Woodside ferry service coming in May. Ridership stats on page 30-32 and 42-45 of the PDF.

That new Halifax logo is such a disaster...and that livery is downright ass ugly. Nothing wrong with the current livery.

Also anyone know if HRM/Metro Transit is still planning to re-route the 401 to service the new MetroX terminal in Porter's Lake? I'm surprised that isn't being talked about...

Sure, the new logo's not what I had in mind (I'm still not sure about those "A"s), and people can rightfully debate its merits, as well as the amount of money spent. I would still argue, though, that it's miles better than the old one, which is starting to show its age, and there's thankfully no lighthouses or waves in sight. I guess we'll just have to disagree.

I do like our current transit livery, except for the amount of blank white space left on a bus: I would much prefer something like the TransLink livery.

As far as I know, there's been nothing new on the Porter's Lake issue since this staff report in January:

The colours are nice. I have a feeling the bit on the HVAC will be deleted, given how little space there is on one (it's on a CNG tank on the bus shown here). Near the rear, I'd prefer "Metro Transit" in lieu of "Halifax" but in the same typeface. It appears that the white space near the middle is to preserve space for ads, but I'd prefer if it wasn't there.

Nope, we have people that live in Windsor and work with us.

Thank you very much, Calamin. I'd love to apply for Metro Transit some day, but I'm currently in the process of buying a house and my search is taking me as far as places like Stewiacke.

Stewiacke isn't that bad of a commute to Halifax/Dartmouth. I live in Cooks Brook / Middle Musquodoboit and can make it to Scotia Square most days in just under 60 minutes, Burnside is 40-45 minutes if I travel from my place via highway 224 to exit 9 at Milford. It's 10 minutes longer if I travel the Old Guysborough Rd behind the airport, even though it's less mileage, its all the tight turns along the route.
