Well, here we go. How will riders be affected by The Big Lift? Halifax Transit has released the answer:

Route And Schedule Adjustments Effective February 23rd, 2015:

Shuttle Routes (Scotia Square to Highfield/Bridge Terminals, 6:30pm to end of service, Sunday to Thursday):

If the MacDonald Bridge is NOT closed: 10 minute headways to 10:30pm, 15 minute to end of service on weeknights. 15 minute headways on Sundays.

If the MacDonald Bridge IS closed: Same headways, but each trip will take approximately 35 minutes vs. 13 when the bridge is open.

Route 1:

Will not service Bridge Terminal during MacDonald Bridge closures. Route will truncate at Scotia Square.

Route 10:

Will not service Halifax (Dalhousie-bound) or Bridge Terminal (Westphal-bound) during MacDonald Bridge closures. Route will truncate at Scotia Square (Westphal-bound) or Bridge Terminal (Dalhousie-bound).

Route 7:

Weekdays: Trips Novalea-bound will depart Young/Gottingen approximately 1-2 minutes earlier.

Routes 14/61:

Interline dropped during MacDonald Bridge closures. Route 14 truncated at Scotia Square, Route 61 truncated at Bridge Terminal.

Route 41:

Last 3 Dartmouth-bound trips will not service Bridge Terminal during MacDonald Bridge closures. Route truncated at Scotia Square.

Route 52:

Will not service Bridge Terminal (Burnside-bound), or Halifax (Bayers Lake-bound) during MacDonald Bridge closures. Route truncated at Bridge Terminal (Bayers Lake-bound), and Scotia Square (Burnside-bound).

Route 90:

Weekdays: Minor PM rush hour adjustments (Larry Uteck-bound).

Route 159:

Final Portland-bound trip to take the Mackay Bridge during MacDonald Bridge closures.

Route 320:

No service to Halifax during MacDonald Bridge closures. Route truncated at Bridge Terminal.

Alderney Ferry (Adjustments Effective March 2nd):

Weekdays: headways decreased to 15 minutes until end of service.

Sundays: Will enter service at 6:30am and travel on 30 minute headway (i.e: Will run on Saturday schedule).

Welp...looks like I'll be taking the ferry a lot more often over the coming months. I can understand just having one shuttle route instead of re-routing EVERYTHING, but it does cause three routes to be broken in half (arguably, three that could be well-served to be broken up in a future system redesign...makes one wonder if the 10, 52, and 14/61 stay split in half afterward...), and those shuttles are gonna be PACKED - hope they're planning on sending Artics for 'em.

From what I have read and seen it is Artics that will be used for the shuttles. Also the shuttles will only be running as far as I know Sunday To Thursday, the shifts that we bid on that start in a week have full service on Friday and Saturday nights ( all buses crossing the bridge that normally do). When they speak of bridge closed shuttles and not closed shuttles they are still speaking of Sunday to Thursday. Because of the way our schedule changes work the only way to do it was to start it during our February shift changes. That means there could be 2 weeks to 1 month where we are running shuttles with truncated routes even though the bridge construction hasn't started.

Is the bridge not being closed Friday and Saturday nights, or am I misunderstanding?

Also I thought I had heard (not sure where) that the 52 on the Halifax side would go to Scotia Square..

The bridge commission has said that the Macdonald bridge will remain open on Friday and Saturday night........ we will see how long that lasts.

Yes the 52 will on the Halifax side after 7pm on the nights the bridge is closed will terminate at Scotia Square SB ( same place the 2,4 going to water street terminal stop). It will then start in the same place go right on Duke, right on Albermarle right on R on Cogswell continue on ramp to Barrignton street left on North then back to regular routing.

The time is finally here...today, Halifax Transit unveiled the Moving Forward Together plan, a complete redesign of the system. From my quick look, I'm very excited at what I see!

For a more dense read, here's the PDF of the full 102-page plan itself (12 MB): http://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/transitsurvey/MovingForwardTogetherDraftPlan_Feb172015.pdf

This is going to be a good read. After skimming some of the routes though I was getting rather confused, until I found this page:

http://maketransitbetter.ca/about-the-plan/route-types

The 100-series routes are basically what we now call urban express routes. A sort of merging of the current express routes with the BRT routes...which begs the question, what will become of the existing BRT buses. Will they be used on these new "Link" routes or spread around? Will these new "Link" routes be a premium price, or regular fare? I suppose I may find my answers when I read the PDF....later :)

Of course it doesn't help they're calling them "Link" routes in this proposal. I keep thinking MetroLink.

Also one more thing... route 29 Barrington? Am I the only one disappointed that the route servicing Point Pleasant and Barrington will no longer have the number 9? It's been the route 9 since the 20s. Obviously I understand the new numbering system, with the corridor routes being in the 00-10s. But still.

Well, this all looks quite interesting...for the sake of preservation, here's what we've got:

New Route Numbering Structure:

Routes 1 - 19: Corridor Routes. (Basically, the most essential routes in the system) 10-15 min peak headways, 10-30 min off-peak, 15-30 min weekends.

Routes 20 - 99: Local Routes. 15-30 min peak, 30-60 min off-peak and weekends. Some Locals run peak only, others replaced by Link Routes.

Routes 100 - 299: Link Routes. (Similar to the current Urban Express routes, but also have elements of the Metro Link system as well)

Routes 300 - 399: Regional Express Routes (Similar to the MetroX service) 10-30 min peak, one midday and late evening trip, except for the Airport route.

Routes 400 - 499: Rural Routes (Similar to the existing Community Transit system)

Routes 500 - 599: Ferry Routes (Yep. The ferries are getting route numbers...)

Routes 700 - 799: School Routes (Replacing the mysterious "School Specials") September - June, on school days only.

Timeline for Proposed Changes:

2016/2017: Implementation on the Halifax Peninsula and Mainland South

Wheu! That's a LOT to take in. It's also indicated that most routes (especially the Corridors, but presumably some of the Locals as well) will see increased service on weekends, so this whole thing looks to be a huge step forward for everyone. There's still the public consultaions to go, but I like a lot of what I see here.

It's really bothering me that they're calling the express routes "link" routes. We're so used to calling the MetroLink BRT routes link routes now, I wonder how many people would see them and think... premium price... then not take them. What's wrong with just calling them express routes?

Finally read the PDF, one thing I found interesting is that when the current MetroX cutaways reach the end of their lives, they'll be replaced with standard 40 foot buses. It did not however mention if this is because of overcrowding, or just flexibility to use them on other routes as needed. Probably the latter.

I'll try not to say, told you so. :)

Hey Chris, the confusion has already started. Some people think that their conventional route is being replaced with a more expensive Link route. And did you see how transit is looking into cancelling service beyond Porters Lake (ie. Seaforth)? I'm trying to find the story I read where they also mentioned the idea of bus service to the Lawrencetown area.

Yeah I noticed that. It also said the route would terminate at the Park and Ride lot, and not the shopping centre. I think a lot of people would much rather see it terminate at the shopping centre... it's kind of a destination of sorts. I honestly don't know how many people take it beyond the shopping centre though, so maybe service all the way out to Seaforth doesn't make a lot of sense.

I'm going to submit some feedback through their website, let them know they really need to reconsider calling them link routes. That was just a boneheaded idea.

Just saw this page: http://shapeyourcityhalifax.ca/moving-forward?tool=qanda

The questions are genuinely pretty decent. I was expecting a lot of "this is different, I don't like it" whining but people are pointing out flaws.

The biggest one I see right now in the proposed changes is that there's no convenient place to transfer from the route 8 to anything servicing the mainland or west end, as there is with the current route 80's transfer point at the Joe Howe/Desmond avenue area.

Since i was in Halifax last september, i quickly looked at the change they plan to make and i wonder why they want to eliminate the off peak service on the 185 "LINK". I took a 10:40 am so trip from Sackville to Downtown and the bus (the 185) was full, seems that service is popular off peak

  • 2 weeks later...

From HRM's website regarding transit service for the remainder of today:

Halifax Transit is advising residents it will provide free bus and ferry services beginning today through the end of the service day Sunday, March 22, to assist residents who need to get around the city over the next few days.

Halifax Transit ferries on both the Alderney and Woodside routes today resumed regular service for residents. Visitwww.halifax.ca/transit/schedules/index.php for detailed weekday and weekend ferry schedules.

Access-A-Bus service and regular fixed-route conventional bus service remains suspended for today, and will resume service tomorrow, March 20.

Limited bus service will be provided this afternoon and evening from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on routes along major corridors in the city as follows:

1 Spring Garden - 4 buses

2 Wedgwood - 2 buses

4 Rosedale - 2 buses

7 Robie - 2 buses

9 Barrington - 1 bus

10 Dalhousie - 2 buses

14 Leiblin Park - 1 bus

18 Universities - 1 bus

20 Herring Cove - 2 buses

21 Lakeside/Timberlea - 1 bus

22 Armdale - 1 bus

52 Crosstown - 4 buses

53 Notting Park - 1 bus

59 Colby - 1 bus

60 Eastern Passage - 2 buses

61 Auburn/North Preston - 2 buses

62 Wildwood - 1 bus

66 Penhorn - 2 buses

68 Cherrybrook - 1 bus

80 Sackville - 4 buses

90 Larry Uteck - 1 bus

Please note that as buses are not able to operate on the posted schedules today, GoTime is not in operation.

Today's bus service is limited as Halifax Transit only has access to 40 per cent of its fleet due to an issue with snow load on the roof of the Burnside Transit Centre. The heavy snow load on the roof forced the municipality to close the building yesterday as a precautionary measure until the snow can be removed and the building is deemed safe for Halifax Transit employees. The Burnside Transit Centre is the location of approximately 60 per cent of Halifax Transit's fleet of buses, with 60-70 of those vehicles stored inside the building, as well as Access-A-Bus dispatch and scheduling office. As a result, Halifax Transit is unable to deliver a scheduled, fixed route bus service or Access-A-Bus service until access to the Burnside dispatch centre and buses is re-established.

Halifax Transit and the municipality understand that the limited bus and suspended Access-A-Bus services may be an inconvenience to some residents; however, the safety of passengers and Halifax Transit employees must be our top priority. Thank you to passengers for your patience and cooperation as the municipality works to clean up after this week's storm.

http://halifax.ca/snow/

Anyone local knows we received a metric shit load of snow this week. Not quite Charlottetown levels, but for us here it's a lot. Transit was suspended yesterday, and this morning, however it seems the reason this morning has more to do with the snow issue at the Burnside garage, specifically the roof. According to the info above, transit will operate certain routes this afternoon from 3-8 pm, probably on a load and go basis. Presumably these buses are coming from the Ragged Lake garage.

I counted up the number of buses it lists will be operating on each route and I counted 38. Add a few standbys and that's probably 40 or maybe a little more. My question is, is that all Ragged Lake has? I'm not dissing transit or the effort, they're doing a great job considering the circumstances, but if Ragged Lake has more than 40 buses on the lot I would have thought they would all be out. I mean, only one bus on the route 14, Leiblin Park to downtown Halifax? That's a lengthy route.

Maybe they're going to have a whole bunch of standbys and shove them into service as demand requires...

Anyway, interesting to see how they're dealing with this situation.

A good news story about a Halifax Transit operator helping a lost dog get reunited with her owner. :)

Wandering husky gets lift on public transit until reunion with Dartmouth owner

Call her Halifax’s Littlest Hobo.

Keiko, a two-year-old husky, leaped over her backyard fence Tuesday afternoon to roam the streets of Dartmouth.

It wasn’t the first time the wandering canine had made a run for it. But this time the hound didn’t come back.

In fact, it wasn’t until Keiko started dodging cars on busy Main Street that a passerby waiting for the bus grabbed hold of her to call animal control.

That’s when Halifax Transit No. 10 bus driver Gerry O’Donnell pulled up to the stop.

“The passenger told me that the dog almost got hit by two cars and of course my heart sank,” said O’Donnell, who owns two dogs. “Huskies are runners and I knew she had probably made it out of her yard.”

She asked when animal control officers were expected to arrive, and the passenger replied 10 or 15 minutes.

“I said ‘Trust me, sweetheart, they’ll be longer,’” O’Donnell said. “But the passenger had to get to Halifax, so I said ‘Good enough, this is what we’ll do.’ The only dogs I’m supposed to have on the bus are service dogs, so I broke the golden rules.”

O’Donnell, a dog lover involved with dog sledding, dog fostering and a dog rescue organization, told the passenger to take the nomadic canine to the back of the bus and hold her there.

“Keiko was as good as gold,” she said. “She just has a beautiful temperament.”

At some point, O’Donnell said she glanced in the rear-view mirror and saw the pooch perched on the back seat happily looking out the window.

“I knew she was well taken care of and well loved and I just wanted her to get back home.”

When O’Donnell reached the end of her run at the Macdonald bridge, she said goodbye to the passengers and snapped a picture of the adventurous husky to share with her dog-loving friends and the Nova Scotia Lost Dog Network.

Within minutes, she said, the owner of the dog was found, and she arranged for the dog to be picked up from her home.

But that post went on to be shared and liked on social media tens of thousands of times.

Paige Price of Dartmouth, the dog’s owner, laughed that Keiko had gone viral on the Internet.

“She’s a very energetic dog,” she said. “She’s gotten out before, but she came back.”

Price said the snow is still really high in her backyard. She said her father dug trenches beside the 1.8-metre fence so Keiko couldn’t jump out.

“She must have leaped quite a distance,” Price said. “I’m not sure how she did it.”

She said the dog went missing at about 4 p.m. Tuesday and she was reunited with the pooch by 9p.m.

“I’m just really thankful.”

Price said her mom went to a pet store Wednesday to buy a harness and the people recognized Keiko from the viral video.

“They gave her a free dog tag.”

O’Donnell said she’s pleased she was able to help the rambling dog return home.

But there’s just one thing.

“She still owes me $2.50 for a bus ride,” she said, laughing.

"Exploring Transit Role in Main Street Community"

http://dartmouthtribune.ca/2015/04/13/exploring-transit-role-in-main-street-community

“Main Street is living up to its potential as a thriving quarter where housing, jobs, services and amenities are all within a one-kilometer radius.”

But, he noticed a problem with transit services in eastern Dartmouth. And with the new bus plans.

“A lot of overlapping service is proposed to be placed on the Portland Street and Cole Harbour Road corridor while the already weak service levels on Main Street become further carved in stone.”

I believe Transit's just spoiled which ferry will be retired when the Craig Blake enters service. Sometime in the last couple days, the bridge tower on Dartmouth III was painted bone white, and they've marked patches of the deck needing to be re-sealed, so expect the Halifax III to be the one going away in a few months. Curious to see how they'll put the new livery on the ferries - will it be centered on the bridge tower, or will they do it like the buses and paint both ends...

Oh, and just in case you haven't seen Wilson Hum's pics, this year's XD40s are arriving early due to "The Big Lift" and Classic retirements causing a bit of a bus shortage. Buses 1199-1207 should be in service in the next few weeks.
