There are some good links in it to showing further detail. (The "links" follow, right at the bottom.) (This may be "old news" to some on here) Train Storage Tracks, City of Kitchener On November 12, 2010, Minister of Transportation, Kathleen Wynne announced inaugural GO Train service for Guelph and the Kitchener-Waterloo Region for the end of 2011. The Province of Ontario is investing $18 million dollars in this project, which will include a train storage facility in Kitchener and three new GO Train stations. Improvements: Extended service for the Georgetown corridor from Georgetown to Kitchener-Waterloo A train storage facility in Kitchener will get service to the community sooner and help build ridership Inaugural service will have new stations in Acton, Guelph, and Kitchener Project description: To provide inaugural GO Train service to Guelph and the Kitchener-Waterloo areas by the end of 2011, we need to store two trains in Kitchener. Without suitable train storage tracks, GO Train service would not be available by the end of next year, and could take many years to implement due to its operating and construction costs. Location: City of Kitchener, north of Victoria Street South, between Park Street and King Street West Current Status: On December 16, 2010, we held an Informational Open House in the City of Kitchener about the train storage tracks. The session was well attended and the community’s interest documented. As a result, we have put together a report following the open house titled, “Kitchener Train Storage Tracks: Environmental Status Statement.” This report talks about the completed Georgetown to Kitchener Environmental Assessment, the inaugural service scenario, the train storage tracks, and GO Train storage facility operations. It goes into further detail about the environmental background of the project and explains the noise and air quality studies that were completed as part of the environmental impact evaluation. The appendix includes the comment sheets received from the open house and GO Transit’s responses. Although the addition of the train storage tracks falls under a category within the GO Transit Class EA document which does not require a formal Environmental Assessment document, we have prepared the Environmental Status Statement to provide more information to our stakeholders about this project. A one-way trip from Kitchener to Union Station will take two hours and cost about $15, cheaper if a monthly pass is purchased. Go Transit released details of its planned rail service Tuesday at a media event attended by politicians and dignitaries. The provincial transit service plans two trains departing each morning, Monday to Friday. Two trains will return in the afternoon and evening. There’s no weekend service. A schedule may be released within two months, said Greg Percy, vice-president of operations for GO Transit. Passengers will use the Via Rail station on Victoria Street North. Some parking will be made available nearby at King and Victoria streets, on vacant public land targeted to become a transit hub for trains and intercity buses. Construction is underway on a $5-million layover facility where trains will park overnight in central Kitchener, between King and Park streets. The site was chosen as a cheaper, scaled-down alternative to spending $20 million to park trains west of Kitchener at Baden. Percy does not expect residents to be bothered by noise from diesel trains that must idle to warm up in the mornings. “It will be a non-issue,” he said. He could not say when Go Transit might add outbound trains or bring Toronto commuters into Kitchener in the mornings. “We’re going to have to see how the ridership goes,” he said. During morning rush hour… •The existing weekday eastbound 6:47 a.m. train from Georgetown GO Station will now start at the Kitchener GO Station at 5:52, serve the Guelph Central GO Station at 6:14, then stop at Georgetown and all other stations along the route. Transit Man Posted December 7, 2011 Author Report Share Posted December 7, 2011 A report went to the Planning and Works Committee this afternoon proposes that GO TRAIN users can ride GRT for $0.50 by showing a GO Pass to the driver. People taking transit to get to the GO station. By the way, GO Transit will compensate GRT $1.45 for every $0.50 ride, so GRT will be way ahead of its average per-passenger revenue for GO-subsidized trips. I have a card but I need to activate it by tapping it to a device, but I don't intend to make a trip (and really, where can I go with the initial $10 balance without putting it into negative which locks the card?). I can't add more to it until it's activated. There should be balance checkers at the Kitchener VIA Station in time for the launch...it definitely will be Presto equipped though. If there isn't, what you can do is tap onto the regular Presto ones, then press reverse fare and tap again, which will eliminate your fare. I just happen to have asked Presto this last night on Twitter, they response was that they will definitely be active by December 19. Given every GO train station has a balance checker I don't see why it wouldn't be active too, it'd be more work to get Presto staff out twice. It would be so much more efficient on both their operations and for the convenience of their riders to be able to use Presto. I hope instead of a period pass they use the declining fair model like GO uses of the course of a month. There are often months when a monthly pass isn't worth it but I sometimes just buy one for the convenience of not having to mess around with transfers. It would be so much more efficient on both their operations and for the convenience of their riders to be able to use Presto. At this point it's not up to GRT. Presto was a GTHA + Ottawa project and they're still not done rolling out to those areas. Only once Ottawa is complete can other systems like GRT/Guelph/etc join in, and they're already working with Presto so that happens as quickly as possible after Ottawa.
