1999 Orion VI Retirement Watch

Recommended Posts

On Thursday, I rode 4075 on run 121-23 from Hurdman to Blair, it then became a route 130. Overall a very pleasant ride. Too bad these vehicles are going but I am sure that there is a very rational and logical reason for this.

The two things I'll miss about these buses are:

1) The seats. The seat where the best comfort after the 93XX series and before buses with their samon coloured seats.

2) The A/C. The A/C on these where just great.

RIP to all Orion VI....this ends the Detroit Diesel era for OC Transpo, as well as an era of pre 2K buses. List will be updated tomorrow.

Also, the end of the green Luminator MegaMax headsigns and treadle-operated exit doors. Now, the OC Transpo fleet is all New Flyer except for 177 Orion VII NG hybrids and 75 ADL Enviro500 double deckers, and is 100% Cummins powered.

Since the Orion VI are no longer going out, here is a list of which garages there presently being housed at.

Industrial,Merivale,Pinecrest have none.

ST Laurent North

4013,4024,4055,4076,4090,4096

It appears the last 6 that where out the last week or so of March came out of ST Laurent North, while the ones in ST laurent South remain decommisioned.

ST Laurent South

4002,03,06,07,09,12,18,23,30,33,35,36,38,40-7,49,51,52,53,58,59,61,65-8,73-5,79,80,85,87,88, 89,91,4102,,103,107,109,110,112-5,119,121,122,124,126,129,130,134,136,137,138,139,140.

As to how long these Orion Vi's will be remain at ST Laurent garages, I don't know? or when they'll finally be tendered for scrape metal that i don't know either, but i'm guessing by the end of august they'll be gone perhaps even before then. It'll be said to see them go.

Also one thing your missing is the sliding windows. There's no more on any of the other buses.

I was down at OC(ST Laurent)this morning picking up the spring issues of the timetables and I saw at least 6-10 Orion VI parked in front running. As to why they where there or why they had them running I don't know but isn't that waste of Diesel fuel?

The Orion VIs also marked the end of Faraday real stop request bells as opposed to the 21st century digital sound chimes. Those buses truly represented the last of the 20th century at OC.

Speaking of Faraday bells...anyone know where I could possibly find a clear recording of one? Preferably with no background noise?

I got a message early this evening from someone who spotted 4018, 4080 and 4101 being transported on a flatbed.

These Orion VI's are still present on OC Property

ST Laurent South

4013,23,30,33,99,4109,10,12,33,39(maybe these are the ones sold to Sault Ste Marie Transit? 10 buses along with 4018,4080 & 4101 3 buses make 13 units? Not 100% sure on that though?)

Pinecrest

4024(I'm asuming this one is going to be part of the historical fleet as its the only Orion VI stored with rest of the historical fleet at Pinecrest?)

There is what looks to be an Orion VI at Walkley Yard, next to the new O-Trains, visible from the Bank St. Overpass. I don't think it has a windshield but it is hard to tell. I also don't think it was there yesterday, and it certainly wasn't there earlier this week. There is another OCTranspo bus behind it in bad condition, and likely an Orion VI, but I couldn't tell at a glance.

Nice finds! Do you think you could get some pics of some sort? :)

While I cannot verify 100% as to why those Orion VI's are at Walkley Yard, it may be related to police training by Ottawa Police and RCMP as per this Ottawa Citizen article: http://www.ottawacitizen.com/news/Ottawa+police+RCMP+join+forces+anti+threat+unit+training/8923609/story.html

Thanks for the info. That is what I figured, these would probably be used the same way the orion VI was used by the CPP.
