Travelling as a passenger on a great lakes freighter

Recommended Posts

Last night I was talking with my dad and he said something about travelling on a laker (Great Lakes freighter) as a passenger when I expressed a slight interest in going to Thunder Bay. Does anyone know anything about sailing as a "passenger" on a laker?

Great Lakes freighters do not carry passengers, unless you are well connected with someone in the industry. Having said that, from time to time tickets are available for sale for fundraising for volunteer groups associated with the industry. If you are the lucky winner, off you go with a companion or a few others. There are also auctions on occasion for an occasional trip or two. Watch sites associated with the industry for more info/details.

This is the article to know, from a website that I know well for years.

http://www.boatnerd.com/trips/

It also features the past winners/highest bids.

And it seems that my favorite, SAGINAW, is also available for it! :)
